MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippine president-elect has encouraged the public to help him in his war against crime, urging citizens with guns to shoot and kill drug dealers who resist arrest and fight back in their neighborhoods.

In a nationally televised speech late Saturday, Rodrigo Duterte told a huge crowd in the southern city of Davao that Filipinos who help him battle crime will be rewarded.

I like that he has the balls to challenge the Catholic Church, which is had semi-dictatorial powers in the Phillipines.

I’ve been going to the PI for nearly 50 years, and have lived there off and on for years. There is no way in the world to compare the Philippines to the USA.

This guy has the potential to be a real disaster. He’s going to make a very dangerous country even more dangerous and he is likely to push the country away from the USA and into the arms of China.

Although his rhetoric sounds good it has the potential to do untold harm to the PI and the people living there.

Do they allow “I thought the guy was a drug dealer” as a defense in Murder One?

Yeah! The Catholic Church has a VERY long-time record of standing against abortion AND the LGBT’s in the Philippines!

This is insane. No judge or jury. Just kill anyone that you suspect of drug-dealing.

Wow, creative policing. Maybe create “seasons.” Sell licenses. LA could be back in the black in no time

‘you are being attacked by a mob, you MUST defend yourself’

So would it be your position that citizens here should be able to kill their political opponents,I doubt that and I doubt anyone here would agree..but I’m not sure.

No. My position is that the right of self defense is ABSOLUTE.

If someone has me under immediate threat of life and limb, I MUST defend myself.

It is encoded in every cell of anyone whose ancestors lived long enough to reproduce.

And I take it your position is that if you were attacked by a mob, you'd curl into a thumb sucking ball, and hope they didn't actually kill you?

Somehow I don't think you'd do that.

Or perhaps you really aren't a Montanan?

Not really disagreeing, but in the mob situation you are referencing the use of lethal force for self defense is likely to get one charged and convicted of murder I.

“Somehow I don’t think you’d do that.”

In the PI I am often be in very large crowds with the knowledge that if attacked no one would help me. I survive in an environment like that by making sure everyone know I am prepared to defend myself. However, as I can’t own a firearm there I need to be prepared for physical violence..

I don't disagree.

But whether you are in Ferguson or San Jose, when law enforcement stands around with their hands in their pockets, even if the mayor has ordered them to, and you are being attacked by a mob, you MUST defend yourself, or risk being burned out of your home and business, death, or worse.

Curiously enough the image of the last guy being tackled has vanished from image searches...

Charged, probably, convicted, maybe, maybe not. Still better than being killed or maimed for life on the spot.

Since you openly advocate a “Republican” who instituted Sharia courts in his sector of the United States, who cares.

Yeah! The Catholic Church has a VERY long-time record of standing against abortion AND the LGBT’s in the Philippines!

Shortly after I came to live in the Philippines, I was invited to a "Beauty Contest". I didn't know that it was a Miss Gay Ormoc City contest, until we arrived and were seated. These flamboyant queers were all dressed in sequins and feathers, and paraded around trying to get the most attention. Some looked feminine, but most just looked like flamers.

BUT, when it actually began (an hour late while waiting for a judge to arrive), I was floored when they asked this little old Roman Catholic lady to lead the prayers at the start and she prayed loudly and long. WOW. I started inching toward the door to miss the lightening bolts!!! I didn't care to stay any longer and my friend was angry...

Now, to respond to what Duterte actually says about "killing the drug dealers and other criminals, he says"

“The drug pushers, kidnappers, robbers, find them all and arrest them. If they resist, kill them all, he told about 2,000 people who cheered and shook their fists during a central Manila rally shortly after midnight.

You have had an interesting life! Thanks for those colorful vignettes. Did the old lady pray in Tagalog or what? Did it sound like a memorized pryaer, or was it enthused and Pentecostal-like? Did she say anything about God’s will be done? Did it look like the flamboyant queers were praying along? Wow, what a bizarre scene.

Hard to fairly evaluate Duterte without knowing the Filipino context, I’ll admit. But a call for extrajudicial killings can’t NOT be dangerous.
