Florida Mom, Off-Duty Deputy Thwart Abduction of 13-Year-Old Girl in Store, Police Say

Surveillance video captured a dramatic scene inside a Florida convenience store where a man allegedly attempted to kidnap a 13-year-old girl, according to police.

Suspect Craig Bonello entered the store Tuesday and grabbed the teen, who was shopping with her mother, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office said.

Bonello, 30, can be seen on a surveillance video pulling the girl by her arms and dragging her to the front door, police said of the midday incident, which happened about 80 miles west of Orlando.

Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said Bonello was "intentionally shopping around the girl and seen stretching on the video."

"He searched out his victim. He went after that child," Dawsy said today at a press conference.

But the teen's mother jumped into action, grabbing her daughter's arm while fighting off Bonello.

"He got his butt kicked by the mom. That was the great thing about that video," Dawsy said.

Bonello eventually let go and ran out the front door just as off-duty Citrus County Sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Behnen was getting out of his patrol car to enter the store.

"At MY Dollar General, the perp in this story would have been held a gunpoint by the patrons of the store.

True story....some of my kin owned a small general store in our very tiny rural community in South Louisiana.

A couple of the kids of the immediate family were into "electronic" stuff (this was back in the early 1970's, and "electronic" was pretty primitive compared to now), and had "wired" the store so they could listen in on the store from home.

Late one night, they heard voices in the store where none should be at that hour. It was obviously a robbery in progress.

Dad (and store owner) gets on the phone and calls a few neighbors. A short time later, the store is surrounded by locals with guns (I should mention that the Dad was a former Marine, with five kids (including the girl), who were armed and could shoot).

At some point the perps became aware of the situation, and THEY called the sheriff to come and get them.....

Could be, but I still would have intervened. That couldn’t have been the only person manning the store. He was the closest person to the perp. Even if he had to grab a can, or something else, and hit the guy on the head.

What the HELL did the perp have in mind?

Grab a 13-year-old girl in a public place and just DRAG HER AWAY? Did he honestly think he could pull off such a stunt?

I don’t get it. Jumping out of a van and grabbing a girl walking by would be a “classic” abduction, but DRAGGING one away from a public place? With security cameras and witnesses? And furious moms?

Momma should have grabbed a can of beets and clocked him with it.

Bizarre. What would make the perp think he could get away with it??? There has to me more to the story. I’m betting on there being some sort of romantic relationship between the girl and the perp. A runaway plan where she chickened out? Maybe something along those lines.

Not condoning his actions, not for a second. Just trying to make sense of it all.

Yeah, but we tend to take justice in our own hands only for actual assaults/murders. Attempts will only get you beat down and held for the sheriff.
