How Donald Trump May Have Wasted A Monthlong Advantage Over Hillary Clinton
NPR ^ | June 19, 2016 | Jessica Taylor

Donald Trump has taken an unlikely path to winning the GOP nomination for president. And now he's taking an unusual approach to campaigning for the general election that could cost him dearly.

The billionaire businessman effectively clinched his party's nomination a full month before Democrat Hillary Clinton did the same. But Trump spent much of the month of May campaigning in states that won't help him win the 270 votes he needs in November.

Yes, the California primary and contests in other Western states still loomed. But he was unopposed in those GOP contests, and many Republicans wished he had taken the head start to pivot to the general election — and start focusing on critical swing states. Instead, Trump seemed obsessed with a notion that he could run up the score and expand the map — putting into play states that haven't gone for Republicans in almost three decades.

"The Trump campaign starts the general election at an organizational disadvantage," said Ryan Williams, who was a spokesman for Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign. "This is a candidate who won by the sheer strength of his personality and bluster instead of through a well-organized campaign effort."

Bucking the things that have worked for presidential campaigns

NBC News detailed in a news story last week just how skeletal Trump's campaign apparatus really is — absent many positions usually seen as critical, essentially one media contact and with no rapid-response team.

He fired Rick Wiley as national political director, a seasoned GOP operative who was a key liaison to the Republican National Committee, reportedly after clashes with Campaign Manager Corey Lewandowski. And he continues to maintain an aversion to data and analytics — the backbone of any modern campaign, especially one for the highest office in the land.

Trump has been playing the aftermath of Orlando fairly well IMO, although he should be playing up the testimony of FBI, CIA and Director of National Intelligence directors also claiming ISIS is attempting to smuggle terrorists into this country under the guise of refugees in contrast to the mess on Hillary’s watch that got us in this position to begin with.

There are some people that don’t want to criticize even though we are losing in every poll. There is a difference in constructive criticism and attacks.

“I think Trump tossed away some important moments in the past month by getting into pissing matches about his personal enterprises....Donald,don’t respond or get sucked into anything related to you personal crap or you will loose!!
Let your legals at corporate handle it.”

I agree.

I saw the headline of this article and thought it may be true. I’d have liked him to be up by 10 by now.

But this article I don’t agree with at all for the reasons they state.

He should definitely not bring in hundreds of professional political class people.

He needs to keeps being Trump and focus on his messages or Muslim ban, sanctuary city ban, no exception deportation of illegals who commit crimes etc...and pointing out the utter corruption of the major media and political establishment.

He should not talk about Trump U law suit.

“I agree with many of your thoughts. I suspect he resists growing the team, not wanting to deal with the typical rnc hacks and saboteurs.”

Yes and he is right to hold to this.

Well spoken. I hope Trump gets his campaign in order.

And what better way to do it than to listen to the advice of NPR!

That’s something that should be brought up too. This stuff is common sense. There is plenty to crush Hillary with.

You’re right. As screwed and corrupt as Hillary is, SHE STAYS IN CHARACTER ALMOST ALL OF THE TIME while in public. I don’t think Donald believes staying in being consistent in character, most the time really matters. It does, because most voters don’t follow the issues, they go by first and last impression. Every word that comes out of your mouth, and some words that you choose not to say, DO matter, the moment you throw your hat into the ring.

Most voters have a very short attention, so it's a waste of time and money to do too much right now. Voters tend to decide in the final two or three weeks before they vote.

Thanks to early voting, there's a bit of a sliding window of time to deal with so that complicates matters a bit.

But... depending on events in the final month Trump will have to ajdust his focus. If there is a terror attack near then then that will have to be the focus. If there's another financial "crisis" perfectly timed like in 2008 then the advertising focus will have to adjust accordingly.

The timing of this is pathetic. The latest polls show Trump and Clinton tied again. So much for wasting a month. NPR reporters must spend sleepless nights thinking up disinformation pieces.

I’ve got to disagree here. I thought campaigning in CA was an excellent idea. I think a lot of people do not realize the nature of the threat to the country these violent Aztlan/La Raza types present. Watching them show their true colors was good publicity for Trump. I was happy with each new speech I saw that he was scheduled to give in CA, and he went up in the polls during that time. He got far more publicity with those speeches than he would have making yet another stop in FL or OH, and I came across several people online who were on the fence who said that watching the violent leftists at his rallies pushed them fully into the Trump camp.

He’s gone down since then, but not because he was campaigning in the wrong states. Foremost, I think it’s obvious (though hardly anyone seems to be mentioning it anywhere) that Hillary’s numbers have improved primarily because she secured her party’s nomination and some of the discontented Berniebots have returned to the Dem fold. This is exactly what happened to Trump after he got the Republican nomination and was to be totally expected. Beyond that, of course, Trump does appear to have been dinged by the Judge Curiel controversy, but more importantly by the continual attacks by “Republicans” in office and the media. I’m not sure how major shifts in his campaign could have done anything to stop these real issues.

The biggest hit was the Mexican judge controversy

I agree. It wouldn't have happened if so many who were supposedly supporting Trump hadn't jumped on the opportunity to undermine Trump's campaign. The worst of them was Newt Gingrich, who was either a saboteur or loud mouth buffoon (or both).

I suspect that Trump will move forward very cautiously. Gingrich's backstabbing and the refusal of the wannabee candidates to honor their oath are proof positive how careful Trump has to be, moving forward.

YIKES - THE POLL NUMBERS!!! The Bloomberg and Reuters/Ipsos polls were SO COOKED as to be laughable.

These polls we created to give the left-leaning media a hammer to pound Trump. Bloomberg’s poll HAD ONLY 25% REPUBLICAN in a sample where only 65% were likely voters and 35% were ____ ...well, it never said.

Please LET TRUMP BE TRUMP and stop wringing hands and wailing - it only helps the Romney-Kristol-Ryan-Sasse-Kirk-Bush Dynasty wing of the party. In case everyone forgot, Trump will be in the Midwest in OHIO - a SWING STATE for the RNC Convention in July.

One suspects Trump will blanket everything from Wisconsin to Pennsylvania around the Convention. Voters don’t even come out of hibernation until after Labor Day. That’s when we will know what the economy will look like on Election Day. If you pounce on the weak 38,000 jobs number now - you can be hoist out your own petard when a possible July blow-out number is published to reflect summer job and construction hires.

More mental masturbation.

I heard he raised like $12 million dollars in his stop overs at TX, NV and AZ.

I’m telling you, Folks. Don’t read this garbage. These people George Will, Steve Hayes, Krauthammer, Kristin Powers, et at are absoulutely stupid.

YOu picture them dressed up at their little cocktail gatherings.

Proof this past year that they know nothing, and people like George Will are the most clueless.

I’m listening to Lou Dobbs.
