Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.) submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on Wednesday that laid out his plan to remain as a member through October 3.

The letter, sent a day after a jury convicted him of 23 corruption charges, was quickly ripped by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who called on Democratic leaders to join him in demanding Fattah's immediate resignation.

"Mr. Fattah has betrayed the trust of this institution and the people of Pennsylvania, and for that he should resign immediately from the House of Representatives," Ryan said in a statement he tweeted out Wednesday.

"We must hold members to the highest ethical standard and I hope that Democratic leaders will join me in seeking his immediate resignation."

On Tuesday, a Philadelphia jury delivered a guilty verdict for Fattah, who was convicted on charges related to bribery, money laundering, fraud and racketeering. He faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison, as several of the charges he was convicted on carry sentences of 20 years each.

In his letter to Ryan, Fattah said that he is "sad about the results that the jury rendered yesterday and because of that, my resignation is effective October 3, 2016.

"Despite my resignation, I am working to clear my name of these charges and plan to mount an appeal," Fattah said.

After Paul Ryan’s statement, he had better schedule a vote on the dirtbag’s expulsion or we’ll see once again it’s just tough talk on Ryan’s part. Of course, the pubbies are terrified of being tagged as anti-black so I’m not holding my breath.

There was also one more recently from Louisiana, had the National Guard take him to his house during Katrina.
Had his freezer stuffed with cash. Jefferson, I think his name was.

Right. Took resources away from the general effort to get his formerly cold cash before the looters got it.

Has there EVER been a black congressman that was not a criminal???

That's why they call the BCC the Black Crook Caucus!

Actually Republican Allen West wasn't a crook. Never understood why he bothered to join the BCC. Must have been slumming.

Most likely after the date a special election could be held...

It's the same tactic the Dems used across the river in New Jersey when Jim McGreevy was forced to resign as Governor. His resignation was not effective until after the date when a special election to replace him would be required.

Just another criminal member of the Black Congressional Caucus (and Progressive Congressional Caucus). Others include Rep. Bob by Rush (D-Ill), old Black Panther extremist; Rep. Jesse Jackson III (D-Ill), should be in jail by now; Rep. Charles Diggs (D-Mich), who went to jail.
Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) who has been under criminal investigation for years esp. over his Dominican Republic dealings; Rep. Ron Dellums (D=Ca) - treason; Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich) - Treason; Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Dellum’s former aide, Treason. Former Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga) - racist, anti-Semite, now Marxist psychopath.
Former/later Rep. Parren Mitchell (D-Md) - treason, possible KGB asset. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill) - treason.

Rep. Sheila Lee Jackson (D-Tx) - criminally insane. Rep. Clyburn, Cummings, and Johnson - also insane and for obstruction of justice. And now, Guam will not tip over if we put more troops on it.

Lots more. Fingers growing tired just trying to list all their names and crimes.

yes he must go, but Fattah is a piker compared to the Clintonistas....

Trump should compare this guy’s crimes to all of Hillary’s corruption, foundation money laundering, and influence peddling. Say “send Hillary to keep Fattah company” or something......

His original name is Arthur Davenport.

Rush likes to refer to him as “Chaka-Full-O’-Nuts”.

Chocolate Fatwa/Shaka Fakakta bowed to pressure and resigned on Thursday, a pity, I was hoping to see him expelled.

It would have been fun to expel him, but congressional expulsion almost never happens because politicians can see the writing on the wall and leave before being thrown out.

Ditto with impeachment. It usually never gets to a senate trial because the politician/judge facing impeachment will resign on their own (e.g. Richard Nixon) rather than be humiliated with a Senate trial. Of course, there are a handful of exceptions (Alcee Hastings, Slick Willie, etc.)
