interestingly, though, in Scotland and in Northern Ireland, the pro-European pols are calling for a vote to end their relationship with the UK!

So this could get interesting. A Scotland out of the UK...but in the EU? Wild.

If American history is applied the EU - the European Union will raise an army and ‘force’ Britian to stay in the Union. However, the EU most likely won’t have an ‘Abraham Lincoln’ sworn in in the next few months who will replace their current ‘James Buchanan’ as the Commission President...re: South Carolina - December 20, 1860.

this ain’t got anything to do with the Islamization of Europe — the Moslems in the UK come from UK allowed immigration to the UK by Pakis, Bangladeshis etc.

the people who voted remain were Scots, Welsh, Irish, young people (48.2%)

While the majority of moslems (Pakis etc) voted remain, there were quite a few who voted leave. And Mozzies are less than 4% of the UK, so no deciding factor

If 75% of Muslims voted to remain, then that would be a 2% gain for remain.

2% seemed pretty significant in this election.

Any chance you can briefly explain why Scotland has become so rabidly leftist?

This is one thing that makes no sense to me. The Scots and Welsh are nationalistic when it comes to their relationship with the United Kingdom. Yet the same people who support autonomy from the UK vote against autonomy with respect to the EU, which violates their sovereignty much more than the UK government (in which they have a vote and a voice, unlike the EU) ever could.

It seems as though their vote in favor of EU membership was more about spiting the English than asserting their own sovereignty.

To my understanding a big reason why many scots voted to stay in the UK was the EU. So if the UK now isn’t in the EU, they don’t have at least that reason to stay in the UK? I don’t know.

Very nice to have President Trump on the world stage. Obozo and Hillary are so small, and dumb.

But again, if they value their sovereignty so much that they want out of the United Kingdom, why are they so eager to throw away their sovereignty by remaining in the EU?

The scots that wanted to leave the UK probably didn’t want to stay in the EU either. The ones that wanted to stay in the UK probably had no problem with the EU either. So now maybe they would want to leave the UK to rejoin the EU? If it’s that way at all it must be folks who really dig the EU. Like you said, parsing this with logic might be a losing proposition.

Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are Muslims, and devout ones too.

== actually no, the EU allows smaller nations to have a bigger voice than they would have otherwise -- it's kind of like the US where Rhode Island gets the same number of senators as CAlifornia, but here Rhode Island gets a veto and can choose to reject laws passed by the federal government.

For most Scots, being Scottish and British is, to use an old analogy, a bit like Russian dolls. One can sit comfortably inside the other, without any conflict. That means it’s easy enough to add another one – European – on top. The Scots don’t really notice it, think about it or feel particularly uncomfortable about it. Englishness and Britishness, though, are different. As Anthony Barnett points out in his excellent Blimey, it could be Brexit!, English people essentially see the two as synonymous, as two sides of the same coin, with Englishness facing in and Britishness facing out. Adding the ‘European’ identity to that feels like an imposition.

Also remember that in the 2011 census, 8% of people in Scotland ticked only the ‘British’ box. 62% identified only as Scottish, and 18% put a tick next to both ‘Scottish’ and ‘British’.

The union is based on the common head of state (the Queen), while the Scots have a different law system from the English -- the English have common law while the Scots is based on civil (European style) law

The EU does give smaller "nations" - even those not formally nations a bigger voice

In contrast, England, France, Germany and Spain all went through heavy centralization in the 1800s, trying to stamp out any regional differences -- the French till today try to destroy Breton, Basque, Langue d'oc etc. and the Germans standardized their language, while the Spanish stamped on CAtalan and BAsque. And the English destroyed the regional languages.

The EU is a polyglot entity that gives different sub-entities a seat at the table.
