German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said today that the EU would weather the shock of the British vote to leave the union as he convened crisis talks.
"I am confident that these countries can also send a message that we won't let anyone take Europe from us," he said heading into a meeting in Berlin of his counterparts from the EU's six founding members.

since when did Germany own “Europe?” Current maps show Europe with at least 55 countries, 57 if a few websites are correct. Does Germany “own” them all? It is reminiscent of Hitler’s attitude toward the continent and beyond.
OTOH, look at the muslim population in the former eastern bloc vs western and northern Europe.
Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic have less than 1%, and they apparently want to keep it that way.

He was not talking about regular folks. He was talking about the ruling political elite of which he is a member.
You'd think they'd be setting up a buffer against the EU instead of wanting to get in. Look at Ukraine. An engineered protest and bought off pols and now Kiev wants to join the EU? They'll be a dumping grounds for the overflow Muslim population in Europe while German banking interest suck up all the assets.
Every comment here assumes he is speaking only as a German and that the “us” in the quote isn’t directed at fellow Europeans. This might sound very different to European ears.
I think the “us” in “we won’t let anyone take Europe from us” wasn’t Germany so much as the ruling class. Europe is seen as the property of the “us” who run the system.

Britain and Germany were the two big sources of “welfare” money for the basket case countries in the EU. Now one of them is gone. How long can Germany afford to prop up those money sucking countries? The only countries considering joining the EU are looking for money themselves. How long can Merkel prop up the EU before there is a popular revolt there? Between the immigration problems and coming economic woes, Germany may get yanked out of the EU as well. Then who will pay the bills?
