Gee, how did my great-grandmother, with no job, no Federal child or maternity benefits, and 11 kids, ever pull it off?

Millenials never think of that. The school system has broken-off all contact they might have with history.

You might be right. Maybe the question might be why is it necessary?

Maybe family unit has disintegrated in recent years. That is the real root of the problem, IMO.

I am a conservative and I am absolutely NOT in favor of government funded childcare! It is just another Trojan Horse of socialism and Donald Trump would do well to emphasize that his greatest desire is to allow families the flexibility to keep more of their own hard earned money, to spend as THEY see wish!

Real wages are down across the board for the vast majority of Americans and housing/food/utility costs continue to rise. THAT is the real issue that needs to be discussed every single day!

I support Ivanka Trump if she wishes to work outside the home...but I also support women who want to stay home, especially while their children are young. The best thing about America in the past was our desire to let people run their own lives and not force everyone into a one-size fits all system, which is what much of Europe has become.

Donald Trump will win in a landslide if he tells voters that he, unlike his opponent, trusts the voters to make the best decisions for their specific family/situation. School choice, healthcare choice, freedom to raise your kids as you see fit, etc! Basically, all the privileges the elite now have should be open to everyone else, just like they used to be!

It is said that there are no atheists in foxholes.

I think that is where most FReepers are today. The country is on life-support and it’s 2 minutes to midnight. If Trump can pull us back from the brink, even if he is only 60% Conservative, we are all ready to get behind him. If we lose this thing it’s moot anyhow cause the country is lost. And we can’t do that holding out for a 100% pure Conservative who likely can’t win given the current makeup of the electorate.

At least that’s how you see it if your name is not Will or Kristol.

My grandparents raised 3 babies, one with muscular dystrophy, on a potato chip delivery man’s wages and a prayer.

Now, if young parents don’t get the latest iPhone every year they act like they are living in a personal hell.

OK, sorry for the concern troll accusation. There was some hand-wringing, though.

I'm just saying that issues like this are much more prominent than they were in past decades when the work force composition was different.

New problems call for new solutions.

Vote Trump, and then hold his feet to the fire!

Agree completely. And as I said, I’m voting for Trump. But I plan to hold him accountable for his words and actions, should be get elected. I want to expand the base and appeal to more than the echo chamber. I obviously recognize that’s the only way we win. But I also want to stay true to our principles and see that our leaders stay intellectually honest.

I’d vote for a moldy dish sponge before I voted for Hillary.

I have no problem with some of these social programs or government safety nets — maternal care, etc. In fact, I support them. As Ivanka said, “a little socialism” would be helpful. Ideally small children should be raised by their mothers, but it is not always feasible.

The problem is the lack of moral or cultural framework. At what point are we helping people or enabling certain behaviors? Helping the poor or a hard-luck case is one thing; allowing someone to sponge off welfare instead of working is something else.

Likewise with child care. Helping a widow or divorcee who is struggling financially is one thing — or even a married woman who must juggle childbearing/childrearing with other responsibilities and must work outside the home. However, enabling — or rather, rewarding — out of wedlock births is something else.

My blood boils every time I hear about a single woman who can get knocked up and receive benefits — Section 8, etc. — while I must work 2 jobs to make ends meet. I’m not just paying for her care; I’m paying for a whole lifestyle that conflicts with my upbringing & religious views.

The woman who wants to be a high-powered executive swinging a briefcase yet be home in time for dinner & story time is kidding herself. Children suffer not just because of physical or emotional neglect, but because of the Mommy’s subliminal message that her career is more important.

As far as paid maternal care, I am ambivalent. Yes, it exists in Europe, but the Europeans have a low — & continually lowering — birthrate. So I question its viability.

I KNOW Trump has to try appealing to younger and more center/liberal voters.

BUT - why not make a point that with a better economy and better jobs families will be able to afford having MOM (or Dad) home with the children?

That it’s IMPORTANT for PARENTS to raise their children, not a government agency or a cold day center!

Do any of Trump’s people read FR? Can we get THAT message out?

Ivanka’s speech irked me.

Short answer: We don’t have time.

Reprogramming most Millenials to understand and support Conservative policies is going to take a LOOOOOOONG time.
We have until Nov. 8 to try and save the country.

If Hillary wins she will pack the judiciary with Progressive Activists. She will legalize 30+ million new Democrat voters from the Third World. She will use HUD to force Section 8 housing into every currently safe GOP district in Congress. Let her do that and we will NEVER EVER EVER EVER win another election again. No matter how far our candidate strays from Conservatism.

In short we either elect Trump or its GAME OVER. We don’t have time to get bogged-down in the niceties of philosophical debates.

a 100% pure Conservative who likely can’t win given the current makeup of the electorate.

This is the point I have been trying to make for months. Our country has been dragged so far to the left that we can't reasonably expect to make it back to far right in a single election cycle. Donald Trump can move the electability window back to where a true conservative™ has a fighting chance to win once again.

There is no substitute for a mom, and woe be upon the GOP if it ever embraces socialist institutionalized child raising.

(((
Amen.

So sad to see parents handing over their precious babies for strangers to raise. Those years fly by so fast, and there are no do-overs.

I would prefer to see:
* child tax credit increased for everyone
* childcare tax credit increased

We don’t. We pay for child care for those who will work and stop paying for welfare. But we’re going to have to gradually move from a welfare state to a free state - I don’t see us being able to pull it off politically if we go cold turkey. I think that is what Trump was getting at - we are going to have to compromise some and I think that is a compromise we can work with for now.

Child care is exponentially cheaper than WELFARE. Plus people are DOING something rather than sitting at home. ANYTHING at this point is better than welfare. After we stop the welfare, then we can talk about cutting off the child care.
