One thing that might help: Tell the cops you’ve already shot the intruder, and see how long it takes them to show up. You may not even need to shoot.
BTW, Chicopee is the home of the former Westover AFB, and there are a lot of retired and former service members in the area. It’s like a tiny speck of Texas that was chipped off and landed in a cold place.
