Even NYT commenters are calling BS on this story. For example, here is "Chris" from Missouri http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/11/us/politics/hillary-clinton-money.html#permid=19446427 :

Not really. This was after she had turned a $1,000 "investment" into $100,000 by "investing" with the chief counsel of Tyson - the chicken folks - and Bill (as Arkansas Attorney General) deregulated the disposal of chicken waste. This puff-piece article fails to point out the "coincidence" of the change in waste disposal rules. NYT has been spouting propaganda for a long time now; does the editorial staff no longer believe in competent investigative journalism, or are they all in for propaganda?'

From the excerpts, it sounds like Hillary did not start the cattle futures investment until after the election of 1980.
The cattle futures trading started in October 1978, two years earlier.
Her return was 100 to 1 in a short amount of time, a feat never before or since repeated in that market.
That is because the wins went to her account and the losses to her the Tyson guy’s account.
