(CNN)Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave the United States "an ultimatum," demanding the extradition of the cleric he believes is behind the failed July 15 coup attempt.

The state-run Anadolu news agency reported that Erdogan had said the US had to choose between its relationship with Turkey and Fethullah Gulen, a former Erdogan ally who has been in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania for decades. Turkey has requested his extradition, while Gulen denied involvement in the coup. Breaking down Turkey's rapprochement with Russia

Breaking down Turkey's rapprochement with Russia 08:12 While ties with Washington threaten to cool over the Gulen issue, the Turkish leader this week visited Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in the first sign of rapprochement between the two leaders since Turkey shot down a Russian jet nine months ago. "Sooner or later the US will make a choice. Either Turkey or FETO," Erdogan said, in reference to the movement headed by Gulen.

The best bet here would be for an anonymous group to video hours and hours of Fethullah Gulen for broadcast and DVD distribution in Turkey.

Erdogen is incredibly litigious, suing anyone and everyone who crosses him, especially those who insult him or sneer at him. So it needs to be set up in such a way to utterly infuriate him. He is also prone to lashing out violently at his opponents, so some care must be taken.

All Fethullah Gulen would have to do is to sound reasonable and calm and sensible. It would drive Erdogen nuts.

What will Obama do?

NOTHING.

He will wait and hope the stalemate continues until he can hand it off to the next POTUS.

What will Obama do?

99% probability ignore the request.

Just because Obama and Erdogan are both Islamists radicals do not assume they are in love.

Possible next Erdogan's step -- formal extradition request from Turkish police, to get a formal denial -- Erdogan may or may not bother with this step.

Likely next we will see the US lack of cooperation as the final proof that the US was the sponsor of the coup, enraged Turks on the streets, closing of US bases, and perhaps Turkish "students", a la Iranian "students" from 1980s.

"Has anyone heard any news out of Incirlik (sp?) Is the base still operating? Are the weapons safe?"

Very little info coming out. There was a report that the base had resumed normal operations. The Incirlik FB page has mostly social or day to day type information trying to show a normal situation. However, there is an announcement of change of command for August 11th. Don't know if that is related to the charges Turkey has made against the US, or not.

Obama will hand Turkey over to the Russians, that much is certain.

If he could, it would be the other way around.

90% of Turkey believesthe US and Gulen were behind the coup. It’s theone thing that the country is united on.

And Germans thought a Dutch Communist set the Reichstag Fire.

I think its a safe bet that Gulen is in trouble. Obama might just exile him, leaving it up to Gulen to find a safe haven.

Again, Russia, although no saint of a country, is far less a clear and present danger than Turkey to the US.

Those B61’s are mine main worry... would not put it past the one in the white hut... to just let them be taken.
Who guards them , Turks or the US?

“Turkey refused American Troops crossover in 2003”

That was to be expected given Turkey’s history of putting road blocks to US interest in the ME.

The ME operates on Rumor as the West operates on Newspapers/Radio & TV news.
