I was a hurdler in college. I had a friend who was at Mississippi State. We became friends, well acquaintances, because we were generally the only White hurdlers.
I held the school record for 28 years but the time was so slow that I am not going to tell.
I ran an equivalent of 10.4 in the 100 meters but we had 5 sprinters who were under 10 seconds in the 100 yards so usually did not even run in the sprints. I did usually compete in the 440 relay.
Devon Allen
"I make this .... look easy!"
Yeah Devon, a great story. Blown knee in the Rose Bowl and 18 mos later is running the HH in the Olympics. Wins the trials in a 13.08 which is legit. Amazing.
Yep.
Would have loved to see what could have been if he tried to be an NFL receiver.
He actually wanted to try out to play soccer for Manchester United.
“Gentlemen’s”? They race in morning suit and top hat? That’s an event I’d like to see.
Bob Hayes was a great reveiver for the Cowboys but was not consistent. I remmeber one game tho against the Redskins where he was unstoppable.
I read several years later that he had robbed a store in Jacksonville. Never heard anything about his since except that he died.
Hayes did not start the zone defense but that is all they could use against him. He not only was the fastest man in the world but he had football speed. He could cut and accelerate even better than he could run on the track.
In 70 or 71 at the Florida Relays I was assigned one of the center lanes which are given to the highest rated hurdlers before the heats. I was right next to Rod Hill from Arkansas State who had tied the world record in the 120 yard high hurdles. I beat everyone over the first two hurdlers then ran into the soft track. I had never run on a soft bouncy track before and after a few hurdle it began messing up my steps between hurdles. It really messed me up and I finished something like 8th or so, maybe 7th.
Anyway a lot of runners and not just hurlers complained about the track and they just put down a new one the next year. I actually think I would have liked the track if I had time to practice on one for a few weeks.
It’s always great watching Bolt run. I hope he’s not involved in doping, would be such a disappointment as with Lance Armstrong.
I just remembered his name was Tom Hill not Bob.
