No well deck? It’s a CVE, not a LHA.
Can you imagine the looks on people's faces as that thing comes rolling up on the beach?
Idiotic. I’m smelling the F-35 again. An amphibious ship that isn’t amphibious. Now all it can do is helo in light infantry.....great.
I believe that's why you have LSDs and LPDs.
The assault is amphibious. The ship its own self is not.
Duhe argued America has several key features that lend itself to being the flagship of a MEB. The command and control rooms are spacious and modular, with the ability to bring new systems in and plug into the open architecture set-up to communicate with other ships in the Navy, with forces already on the ground, and with international partners as needed.
Says it all
The ship itself is NOT amphibious. It carries aircraft and amphib landing craft and US Marines for the amphi role. They are capable of carrying 12 CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters; 4 CH-53E Sea Stallion helicopters; 6 AV-8B Harrier attack aircraft; 3 UH-1N Huey helicopters; 4 AH-1W Super Cobra helicopters.
Planned capability includes MV-22 Osprey VTOL tilt-rotors and F-35B Joint Strike Fighters.
Landing/Attack Craft may include: 3 LCACs or 2 LCUs.
You miss something. The USMC can’t just load up with all their gear and be ready for anything with this ship. They will be limited to a 53 sling load.
But it sounds fantastic for command level officers./s
Read the article, no LCACs or other landing craft. This ship has no well deck. But it has really large open floorplan style command and control rooms!
The USS America did a turn around in Guantanamo Bay when it was transiting from the East coast to the West.
I use a picture of it with all hands on the rails as my desktop photo.
It definitely looked like a pocket carrier.
That's true now if they aren't assaulting a beach.
Harriers have been retired IIRC
Yep, you’re correct. Got carried away.
Looks a little like “JEEP” Carrier,
You got a point, though escort carriers weren’t purpose designed, but hastily converted from cargo ships.
The more I study WWII, the more I want to read about the manufacturing, production, transport & logistical sectors that made major combat operations possible.
Gen. George Patton publicly credited the supply & logistics operations which backed up his war campaigns. Unusual then.
No well deck. HEY YOYO’s without Landing crafts or LCAC’s the ship is useless in a assault. You need those vehicles to get the troops and their equipment to the shore. Even with Osprey’s they can only put so much in them and they need a fairly even and clear area to land.
The Iwo Jima (LPH-2) and most of her sisters had neither well or landing craft and they turned in excellent service for close to 30 years.
Get into LIBERTY Ships as much as you can.
At almost 46,000 tons? Heh ...
At her heaviest, USS Enterprise (CV 6) displaced 32,000 tons ...
