KFC recipe challenge: Tribune kitchen puts the 11 herbs and spices to the test
Chicago Tribune ^ | August 19, 2016 | Joe Gray

Ledington, 67, says he used to blend the spices that went into his uncle's world-famous fried chicken, and the recipe in question is the real deal...

How was it? Well, really good. In fact, tasters agreed the test kitchen fried chicken was even better than the Colonel's.

But more important, did it taste like the Colonel’s secret blend of herbs and spices? It came very close, yet something was still missing. That’s when a reporter grabbed a small container of the MSG flavor-enhancer Accent (how did that get in the test kitchen?) and sprinkled it on a piece of the fried chicken. That did the trick. Our chicken was virtually indistinguishable from the batch bought at KFC. (Does KFC add MSG? A KFC spokesperson confirms that it does use it in the Original Recipe chicken.)

Just curious...What’s with the KFC chicken this evening? Anniversary of some sort? Second post seen tonight regarding their secret recipe. And now I am hungry (after eating fried chicken earlier in the day). How about an omelet?

I saw an article about KFC here, searched the web for more information, and thought that the taste test in this article was interesting. I will probably try to make this recipe myself soon.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe it’s a natural domino affect that is happening spontaneously. ‘Contagious gluttony and food fantasies’.

MSG is NOT good for anyone.

Nonsense. Used in the proper proportion (5% of the amount of salt added) it is harmless.

I prefer Popeye’s spicy chicken. Then I get a few packs of Cajun Sparkle to spice it up even more. Besides, it is not as greasy either.

Popeye’s is good but I opt for Church’s. Three breasts and a biscuit for under six bucks.

See the story a few posts down. The Colonel’s nephew revealed the recipe.

If there was a Church’s close by I would give them a try. Same with Raising Cain’s. Church’s would be about a 60 mile round trip, and probably 80 for Raising Cain’s. Only about a 20 mile round trip to Popeye’s. That’s life in the country!!!

Ok here’s the problem. If this tasted like current KFC chicken, it sucked. I had the joy of many buckets of KFC chicken and gravy and biscuits in the 60’s. It was fabulous and I would know that taste today in an instant.

My apologies to those liking Popeye’s, Churches or today’s KFC. They are greasy messes. Original KFC was real food, I pray that level of Southern fried chicken exists somewhere.

Au contraire, Popeye’s is not greasy. KFC on the other hand is extremely greasy. Never had Church’s, so I wouldn’t know.

Had no gut problems with either. KFC is cooked under high pressure.
If it were deep fried in fat I would know. My gut is extremely sensitive to fats.

Crohn’s disease.

Yes, but wouldn’t trade it. It took years to see an Arbys or a Long John Silver up here. With patience bit by bit new places spring up. Now we’ve even an In n Out burger as well as Schlotzskys

Some ‘folks’ find using MSG does not necessarily harm them but does give them a headache. IIRC some folks have a dramatic reaction to it, life threatening The latter is most uncommon, but can occur.

LOL me too! wrote down proportions and the spices and then found the need to go back to add your Accent tip.

I loved In & Out Burgers. Also like 5 Guys, and good ole Roy Rogers. Loved their roast beef sandwiches and Double R Bar burgers. We have McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, Popeye’s & Taco Bell in the closest town I live by, which is about 10-1 miles depending on the part of town. The bigger town about 40 miles away has most of the rest.

Harmless my ass!
MSG triggers brutal migraines in some people, myself included.
