U.S. Navy ship fires warning shots toward Iranian vessel: CNN

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy ship fired three warning shots after an Iranian fast-attack craft approached and circled two U.S. Navy ships and a Kuwaiti vessel in the northern Gulf on Wednesday, CNN reported on Thursday.
It said the U.S. ship fired the shots into the water after the Iranian ship did not leave after a brief radio conversation, CNN said, citing U.S. officials.

According to Stars and Stripes, our boat fired flares, not ‘shots’ as the Clinton News Network is reporting.
Circa 1982 is was in at Battle Group in the South China Sea on the USS Benjamin Stoddert along with the USS Turner Joy and several other surface combatants.
The Vietnamese didn't take kindly to us cruising near their islands and sent out about a dozen armed patrol boats led by a Corvette.
Several .50 cal rounds were fired at the Turner Joy that night, one destroying the stereo in the Officers lounge. Another into CIC.
We DID NOT RETURN FIRE.
Instead we proceed on course, then turned around and passed again in a Battle formation. We radiated fire control at everything that move and all shore installation in range.
And a CAP from the USS Constellation circled above.
It's only when a small boat get TOO CLOSE that we will sink them.
That's what the "real President" Reagan did.

You forget what Reagan did in 1988, when a US ship was damaged by an Iranian mine. He authorized the sinking of iranian ships and other installations. Obama would have called it an “accident” and compensated the Iranians for damaging their mine.

The difference being: In the Persian Gulf the enemy drew blood.

It said the fired three shots from the .50 cal ma deuce after flares “failed to work”, I assume that means the flares failed to convince the hajis to back off, not that the flares malfunctioned.
