Two Orlando-area hospitals are waiving the medical bills of victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting, praising the community response and saying they want to contribute.

Orlando Regional Medical Center has treated 44 victims of the shooting - more than any other hospital. The center's parent company, Orlando Health, says it will not charge victims for their treatment, reports Abe Aboraya of member station WMFE.

"Instead, the hospital will look at federal and state funds, victims' funds like the One Orlando fund, and private funds raised for victims," Aboraya reports for our Newscast unit. "The hospital will bill insurance if a patient has it, but it will not go after a patient's copays.

We identify more with homosexuals out on the town than with other victims ... and in any case, we can always make the taxpayers cover our costs one way or another!

” private funds raised for victims”

Always funds raised for victims but victims never see a dime.

So if I were to be admitted to this hospital for an illness, I would have to pay?????? Sorry, this is discrimination.

Presumably, between the individual victims’ personal health insurance, the government funds (Medicare/Medicaid and state programs), and the donations, everything is covered. Xebu.

But we will pass along their bills to all our other customers, especially those with good insurance.

Very nice of them.

And as long as it was voluntary I applaud them.

But they will bill the family of an innocent toddler who gets shot by a random bullet in some gang war? Or a woman who seeks medical treatment after getting raped? This is pure PR BS.

IIRC, a fund was set up by someone sympathtic to the widow. That fund should be targeted to offset hospital bills of the victims.

It would be very informative to see profiles (not names) of these folks.

How many have private insurance, how many Obamacare, how many on Medicaid, etc.

The hospital is eating a ton of money here - last month I spent 30 hours from check in to check out for an arterial aneurysm stent repair and the bill was 225K. Thankfully we have double insurance coverage.

I talked to a lady who is a MBA hospital consultant type.
She said typically the percentage of uninsured hospital bills recovered is in the low single digits.

Let’s say their full rate is $1,000 per bed per day but the discounted insurance rate is $400.

Are they donating (writing off) the $600 and collecting $400 in insurance?

Or, are they donating $1,000 and writing it off?

Or, are they donating $400 and writing it off?

I don’t know.
