That is pretty much what I was running into also... but what I meant to say was the first military (or pretty much otherwise) rifle that could be dropped into the water (accident or otherwise) raised above the water and then fired (without blowing up in the shooter’s face)..

I can’t recall if it was auto or not.. but it was sometime around WW II, I think..

From what I remember about the movie, he was surrounded by prison staff (after he had made the rifle), dropped it into a water trough, picked it back up and then demonstrated that it would still fire with no complications..
