Willie Wonka was written in Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. The Oompa Loompas are based on a tribe in Africa. They are considered lazy and looked down on. The basis for the chocolate factory is a huge building that I could see off in the distance.

When I was little and would watch Willy Wonka, during the boat ride scene, Gene was totally out of control, that scene was always frightening. It was like a crazy uncle who would just for kicks blow through every third stop light or something, you know what I mean?

I liked the millipede.

RIP Mr. Wilder. You were a tremendously funny guy, and the absolutely perfect choice to portray Willie Wonka.

“The real reason to watch “Lady in Red” again...”

If they made that one today, I shudder to think what you might see when “her” skirt blew up.

He co-created Get Smart with Mel Brooks.

Was a writer for Steve Allen before that.

He also created "Captain Nice" and "Quark." Anyone besides me remember them?

Leni, I also like the picture and your very nice words. It is the picture of a man who had lived a rich and productive life, who was still out and about with a smile on his face. Many young people might be saddened by the picture, but that’s their problem, and it’s a common one. I think the photo is really quite wonderful. Happy trails, Mr. Wilder, and thanks for all the laughs!

Sadly, I don’t think you’d want to see up Kelly LeBrock’s skirt now, either. She hasn’t aged the Raquel Welch way.

The charitable thing to do is to have hope in God’s mercy. You are right that we need to have repentant and contrite hearts, to acknowledge our sins and to seek the merciful help of our savior. What we do not know is what was in Mr. Wilder’s heart when he died and God grants mercy and saves on his judgment not ours.

May God have mercy on both Gene Wilder’s and Gilda Radner’s souls and grant them everlasting peace in His holy presence.

Wasn’t he the young undertaker in Bonnie and Clyde that was taken for the joy ride?

Willy Wonka = one of the greatest movies EVER.
Wilder’s performance was pure magic.
Saw it on the big screen when it first came out, 1971, with a bunch of hippie friends, back in my ganja days.
Years later, bought it on VHS for the kids and grand kids.

“What in the world did he ever manifest in his life to support the notion that he is resting in peace or reunited with Gilda? He faces God the Judge - either with a Savior/Advocate or without one - as will we all. This is the time to meditate on our own ends and what will become of us when we leave this realm, not provide deceptive platitudes.”

What an extraordinarily mean-spirited post.

Yes he was. He also did the voice-over for the classic 60s Alka-Seltzer commercial about "the blahs."

Don’t forget that his chief assistant (based on “Star Trek”’s Mr. Spock) was supposed to be a plant.
