NANTICOKE, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania mother faces a slew of charges after admitting to leaving her children locked in a car outside the gym on multiple occasions, according to prosecutors.
Molly O'Neill and Daniel Johnson, of Mountain Top, Pa., were were arraigned on child endangerment charges Wednesday after an incident over the summer launched a police investigation.
Police responding to a 911 call June 29 found two children locked inside a car in the parking lot of Nanticoke Fitness, according to WNEP.
Police said O'Neill had been running on the treadmill for about 20 minutes when they found her 11-year-old son with Asperger syndrome in the car, along with his 5-month-old baby sister.
When asked where their parents were, one of the children told officers their mother was in the gym, police said.
The officer used a member's pass to access the gym and found Molly O'Neill, the mother, inside. O'Neill allegedly told police she had "rigged" the car so that if the doors were opened an alarm would go off.
Police reported the incident to child services and began investigating...

When I was driving a truck, they sent me to Mountaintop, PA several times to pickup loads at the Poptarts factory. The smell of all the different flavors of Poptarts mixed together was completely nauseating.
I saw that too. LOL
Gotta maintain that ‘beach bod’ at all costs, you know.
I live not too far from this place (Close enough to routinely browse their craigslist) and my wife and I have noticed some of the worst parenting we’ve ever seen in this area.
I’ll go out on another limb and bet that all of these incidents have occured in the past five months.
Which means the questions are three:
Can an eleven year old be left alone in a car?
Can an eleven year old baby sit?
Does the aspergers affect the answer to either of these two questions?
I’m also interested in knowing how the passerby knew that the 11-year old had Aspergers.
I wonder which one of the children told the officers that their mother was inside the gym. The 11-year old or the 5-month old?

Aspergers is not necessarily debilitating, and in my early days it was not uncommon to leave young children in the care of 11-12 year olds for an hour or two.

But in a car? That’s just crazy dangerous, especially with so much kidnapping and human trafficking going on. Sure, an alarm might go off to alert the mother, but a kidnapper would be long gone before she got her well-toned butt to the car.
And weather conditions can create lethal circumstances.
Yup. My Mom used to do so with me and my sister when she went shopping. This was from the time I was around 7 and my sister was 5.
It sure beat having to go it the store with her. She wouldn’t let us look at toys or buy anything. AND, while we were in the car, we got to bother people walking by.

I had to laugh on the same comment. This is what passes as journalism in this day and age.

That reads like the children were locked in the car. I have never seen a car that could be locked in a manner where those in the car could not exit the car without a key. Hence, they were not locked in the car, the car was locked to prevent entry by someone outside the car.

People fall into the trap of letting the 24/7 news industry localize every single event. So, when a child gets snatched in a state 1500 miles away, the local news everywhere makes it into a local story and weak-minded parents begin to believe that the child was snatched from THEIR local grocery store and the kid went to their kids’ elementary school.
This is the basic driver of the snowflake generation.
Remember when many of us were “latchkey kids” who rode the bus home from elementary school, walked from the bus stop to the house, let ourselves in, and did chores and played until the parents got home at 5?
But now, the motivation for the parents of snowflakes is, “what would people think of ME if my kid got hurt?” So, they won’t let their kids be kids. They can’t explore, have adventures, get cuts, maybe even break a bone in the pursuit of having an awesome childhood.
Now, they wrap them up in bubble wrap, walk the kids on leashes, and never let them out of their sight.
Did anyone else notice the so called “alarm” apparently did not go off. Kid opened door of the car for the cops.
I was left in the car alone when I was about 7 because I hated to go shopping. But I was not left with an infant.
My only concern here is the infant and if there was a problem. The door obviously was not rigged with anything and it appears her son could not have just walked into the gym as the police had to use a members card to gain access.
I agree the report was badly written. Click on the news chick saying the five month old was “alone” in the car. Who hires these idiots????

The 11-year-old probably had a dvd player or game in the car.
