Philadelphia -- Summing up his foreign policy in three words, "peace through strength," Donald Trump today called on Congress to end the cuts to U.S. military spending.

"As soon as I take office, I will ask Congress to fully eliminate the defense sequester and will submit a new budget to rebuild our military," Trump told the Union League of Philadelphia in a speech focused on U.S. military readiness. "It is so depleted. We will rebuild our military."

The so-called military sequester was a part of the 2011 Budget Control Act, which mandated $500 million be cut from the military over the decade....

We shall see. Politicians find it easier to cut taxes than cutting debt and government.

When aggressive Iranian mosquito boats start getting vaporized by the dozens, we’ll know there’s a new broom in the WH.

And it won’t be the one Hilly Boo Boo rode in on, either.

“Because the US makes up for the lack of funds from the NATO nations that are not contributing 2% of GDP.

No they don’t.”

What do you meen? Are you saying there are no NATO nations not living up to their agreement or are you saying that the US doesn’t make up for it?

“There’s nothing specific in that. Every U.S. presidential candidate pledges to end waste, fraud, and abuse”

Trump’s been a bit busy running for the Presidency, maybe you could cut him and the team some slack. Do you know how much time and manpower it would take to go line item by line item?

The U.S. doesn't make up for it. The U.S. funds its own armed forces and deploys them as it sees fit. Reduction in European defense spending didn't result in additional U.S. defense spending to make up for it. And an increase in European defense spending wouldn't result in more money for the U.S. armed forces. The two are not related.

That is true. Neither candidate has a serious plan to reduce the deficit.

Since I don't see it happening pre or post election then he can have all the slack he wants.

“The U.S. doesn’t make up for it.”

The US has been making up for it for decades.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/five-reasons-why-nato-nations-don-t-always-pay-their-n619966

“Jolyon Howorth, a visiting professor of political science at Yale University, says that it’s hard to see a scenario where other NATO members would increase their defense spending if they feel that the U.S. will continue to help carry the burden for everyone else.

“Unless and until the U.S. makes it absolutely clear to its EU allies that there is a limit to Washington’s largess, there will be little change,” Howorth said.

Simonyi, who is currently the managing director of the Center for Transatlantic Relations at Johns Hopkins University, largely agrees with this and argues that the U.S. should be more explicit in its expectations for member countries beyond reaching that 2 percent target.”

I dont mean to sound crazy, but how could 600 million not be enough? What is enough? Is it all being spent properly? I want the BEST military, but the best bang for my buck too. Not thrilled that military couldn’t account for a few trillion over the past decade or so.

I know what you mean, but you might also ask for an accounting in the welfare programs, as well. I think you would find enough fraud and mismanagement to make up for the (maybe) trillions that the military can't account for.

Yes, yes, yes we’ve heard it all before. But back to the original question, if the European countries did increase their defense spending then how would that result in more money for U.S. defense spending, as Trump seems to be claiming?

Trump is saying something like this:

Oh the humanity! How will they WE ever survive?

“Yes, yes, yes we’ve heard it all before”

OK...I was hoping I wouldn’t need to spell it out for you, but here goes......

NATO has certain war game requirements, what if’s, event scenarios...where levels of force are needed to prevail. The US has been spending money to make up for force requirements for all these years to meet the threats, This is money that the US would not have to spend, therefor either it gets saved or reallocated to increase our overall readiness.

So Germany gets to promise it’s citizens cradle to grave financial security using the dollars it agreed to put into it’s military to do it’s part to prevail in these scenarios.

And this is not just Trump talking, Congress has been on it for years.
