ANDERSON, S.C. A jury has awarded a South Carolina woman more than $4.6 million after she was stuck by a hypodermic needle picked up in a Target parking lot.
The Independent-Mail of Anderson reported Carla Denise Garrison's award would be one of the largest in Anderson County history if it stands.
Court documents say the Anderson woman was in the retailer's parking lot in May 2014 when her daughter picked up a hypodermic needle. Garrison swatted it out of her hand and was stuck in her own palm.
Garrison was bedridden because of medication prescribed because of the potential risk of HIV.
The paper reports Garrison's attorney had offered Target a deal of $12,000. The company offered $750 in response.
Target spokeswoman Erika Winkels said the company is considering an appeal.

Could the jury be giving it to Target for there bathroom policy???
It is South Carolina
And these same people in the jury are allowed to vote.
That’s going to be knocked down on appeal. I hate Target because of their bathroom policy as much as the next Freeper, but I don’t see why they should be subject to millions of dollars in punitive damages.
They could sweep the lot every day, and still wouldn’t be able to prevent something like this from happening.
She hit a child? How could she get away with that? I raise my voice and people call the police.
Imagine what the reward would have been had she contracted HIV, hepatitis, or tetanus?
Why not just tell the daughter to put the needle down, or even better, carefully put it in a trash can. It doesn’t bite.
I despise Target and do not and will not shop there, but crap like this is pathetic. People are so “sue” happy over minor events like this. Target needs to fight this. What next? Someone gonna call someone else a bad name in the parking lot and hurt their poor feelings? Oh the pain, stress and humility.......I think I’ll sue for $10 million. What a crock!
We get all outraged because of a multi-million dollar finale, but pay attention to the fact that her lawyer offered Target a $12,000 settlement, probably enough to pay for her treatment and other medical and legal fees.
The company responded with a $750 counter.
That is insulting on the surface of it. The suit probably cost Target over a million dollars in just their own lawyers time.
While I am not for people seeing dollar signs because of an accident, this woman sought recompense for a few thousand dollars. Target response is what drove her to make the suit punitive.
Target should fire their idiot lawyers. They could have probably offered $6000 to $8000 and it would have gone away.
One thing is sure is that lawyers cashed in.
Amazing that Target failed to learn from the McDonald’s coffee case. Had McDonald’s picked up the woman’s hospital bill for her burns they never would have had an angry jury hitting them with a punitive judgement. Target manages to replay it.
The mother should be fined for not properly supervising her children. Target did not place the needle in parking lot. Whatever happened to self responsibility?
“....What next? Someone gonna call someone else a bad name in the parking lot and hurt their poor feelings? Oh the pain, stress and humility.......I think Ill sue for $10 million.”......
Tell ya what, I’ll make a deal with you and we can split the $10 Mil between ourselves (what’s left after the attorney’s claim most of it.) Call me..............
“Whatever happened to self responsibility?”...
Lawyers stole it.
She asked for what were fairly reasonable medical costs and they declined.
Indeed a hot cup of coffee in the lap in your own car can get you millions so much for law stupidity is a money maker now days.
Strongly disagree with you. How is Target responsible? They did not place the needle there. And you cannot clean parking areas every few minutes to prevent something like this from happening.
When you read the truth about that coffee burn, McDonalds deserved to be sued..
It's likelier that the $12,000 would have paid for the lawyer's new suit, with enough left over for a band aid for the woman who was stuck.
I’m not arguing the merits of the case. I’m saying that Target had the chance of settling for a drop in the bucket.
Everyday there is someone who slips or trips on the property of a big company and the company settles for more than $12,000. It’s just the cost of doing business in a litigious society.
If they had countered with a reasonable offer, they likely wouldn’t have faced a punitive case, but they countered with a snarky, insulting amount. They have an arrogance problem at the highest level of the company, and it’s costing them.
