FRED ASTAIRE & GINGER ROGERS: “I’M PUTTING ALL MY EGGS IN ONE BASKET”

Fred was a gifted pianist, and in this clip from the movie he plays what he called his “filthy piano” style, a remnant of the ragtime era. It’s an interesting mix of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton and Art Tatum. Ginger looks more at ease with the dance number that follows.

That was a great movie. As always with Fred and Ginger! :)

LOUIS ARMSTRONG & ELLA FITZGERALD: “I’M PUTTING ALL MY EGGS IN ONE BASKET”

Louis could add something to a song that is difficult to define. Known for his trumpet, not his voice, his singing transcends things like simple technique. Ella is in a league of her own. This is one of their great duets.

B. B. KING & DIANE SCHUUR: “I’M PUTTING ALL MY EGGS IN ONE BASKET”

You don’t normally associate B.B. with Berlin. This 1994 recording shows off another side of the great blues singer. Diane gives this song a great turn and does some fine scat singing.

FRED ASTAIRE: “LET’S FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE”

At 2:04, you’ll catch a quick glimpse of the young Lucille Ball, who was then known primarily as one of the Goldwyn Girls, a chorus lineup. She would later become a TV star and one of the most astute businesswomen in the game. In a great irony, she would later buy RKO and turn it into Desilu in the Fifties. She was the one who green-lighted Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek” in 1966. From that small acorn grew a mighty oak.

Fred always had issues with Ginger’s costumes, which led to more than one contretemps on the set. Ginger’s mother often had to step in to keep the peace. In this take, Ginger’s sleeve slaps Fred in the face, creating a moment of movie magic. For 23 more takes, they tried to duplicate that strike, eventually deciding to use Take #1 and just go with it. Ginger’s dress was as sheer and transparent as the movie censors would allow, and the designer was cutting it close!

The song features that minor-to-major modulation common to songs of the Thirties. Fred gives it a heartfelt touch, and the dance sequence is one of the great seductive dances of movie history. We’ve lost a lot in 80 years.

FRANK SINATRA: “LET’S FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE”

This is a Las Vegas big band arrangement from Johnny Mandel. Frank may not have the best voice for this number, but he gives it a great shot.

NAT KING COLE: “LET’S FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE”

There are a lot of ways to write a big band arrangement for this song, and while Frank is all brass, Nat takes a more laid back approach. The video of Fred Astaire with his different dancing partners is worth the video alone.

Oooooh man! Not at all the kind of day you’d hoped for. Dang it. :-(

So your brother was able to get that boat to GA safe and sound? Must have been a sight to see going along the highways. That’s a pretty big boat!

Good that he left his arctic gear up there. Less to haul up there from GA this time.
