A mysterious polio-like illness that paralyzes people may be surging this year
Washington Post ^ | September 21, 2016 | Dan Hurley

Before dinner on July 29, 3-year-old Carter Roberts of Chesterfield, Va., seemed perfectly healthy. That evening, he vomited. When he woke up the next morning with a slight fever of 99 degrees, his mother, Robin Roberts, figured that he was coming down with a cold. The next morning, she found him collapsed on his bedroom floor.

“Mommy,” she recalls him saying. “Help me, help me.”

Carter could barely stand when she picked him up, and his neck was arched backward. “What was most alarming,” she said, “is he had no control over his right arm whatsoever.”

In the hospital, Carter lost control of his right arm, then over his legs and other muscles within a few days. He now can only wiggle a toe and move the left side of his face. He has been diagnosed with a mysterious, polio-like illness called acute flaccid myelitis, a condition that seems to be surging this year.

Through July, 32 new cases of AFM have been confirmed across the United States this year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a sharp rise compared with last year, when just seven cases had been confirmed by that month. The numbers have risen steadily since April. In past years, most cases have occurred between August and December, with a peak in October.

What is the children’s prognosis? Will they recover?

Most had a fever or a respiratory illness a few days before developing paralysis. Many had to be placed on respirators. Although 85 percent of the children recovered partially, only three of them recovered fully. Partial recovery in this is horrible too, they are never the same

One more problem you can’t discount new immigrants from being the cause.

Hell, even legal immigrants and refugees aren’t properly medically screened.

If Mexico has seen such a rise in this disease, it may be an additional reason for them to build a Southern wall.

very few recover fully, per the article...and it takes up to a year to recover and after that, whatever motion you lost, is just lost...

I had an off shoot of this virus some 30+ years ago and the article is correct, if you don’t get your movements back within year you live with what you get back and essentially there is no treatment other than PT. I was in a wheelchair initially and now walk with canes. The result in my case was no balance and no stamina despite PT. When I stand without canes I am constantly tensing and releasing muscles to maintain balance, I have to think about it, it is not natural anymore. Still beats being in that chair!

Wow, I am sorry to hear that, so you don’t think this is new then? Did yours act like this one, a few days of a slight fever then wham?

Yep. They are importing diseased people, with illnesses our doctors may not even recognize,

“They bring their third world diseases, lack of hygiene/health standards which spread their contagious diseases.”

About twenty years ago while I was living in the Houston area, a teacher on one of those talk shows starting delineating the hygiene practices of some of her elementary students from Central America. They cut her off. What she was able to get through was dumbfounding.

An experimental drug - fluoxetin (the active ingredient of Prozac) is tested here in Sweden. The youngest son of a former colleague is getting this treatment now. After almost a week on ventilator it appears the disease has reached its peak. Facial paresis healed and extubated yesterday. Still weakness in one limb but there is hope for continued improvement.

While it is a large increase in terms of percentage, the condition is pretty rare.

Under 40 cases in the country.

Are they actually using Prozac for an “off label” treatment, or is this fluoxetin regarded as a separate drug? The reason I ask is because of domestic FDA approval. I know Prozac can be prescribed, and I know that “off label” treatments can occur. But, I don’t know about fluoxetin.

More like lack of hygiene practices. With the rise of illegals in Texas, the cases of such things as head lice, TB, and whooping cough have increased. It’s not just poor hygiene practices of an individual. Illegals will live in numbers and conditions no American would abide. Little wonder they are breeding grounds for such third-world diseases.

Coming to a school, day care, public place near you.

Off label treatment; the substance has been shown to have anti-viral effects against D68 in vitro.

So, Prozac is just a trademarked name for fluoxetine, apparently.

“lib anti vaxxers”

That’s an interesting comment. Virtually every liberal politician I’ve heard quoted in the media is for mandatory vaccination, despite the fact that NO double blind (short term or long term) independent safety studies have ever been done on vaccines.

Homeschoolers, a super majority of whom support conservative political positions, probably make up the majority of those who choose to either not vaccinate or to only do a subset of the standard vaccine schedule.

It really is amazing how some alleged conservatives believe that it is OK to force medical treatment on others.

Perhaps this mysterious illness is, in fact, polio. Virtually all cases of polio here in the US in the past 30-40 years have been caused by the polio vaccine itself.
