Fear, Anxiety, and Depression in the Age of Trump
Slate ^ | 23 September 2016 | Michelle Goldberg

Posted on 09/23/2016 12:19:54 PM PDT by Lorianne

With the presidential race staggering into its final stretch, the once inconceivable prospect of a Trump victory is becoming, if not likely, then definitely possible. (As of this writing, FiveThirtyEight gives Trump a 42.4 percent chance of prevailing, though that might change by the time you read this.) As that reality sets in, a hallucinatory sense of slow-motion doom is descending on many liberals. (Though not only on liberals.) Victims of Trump-induced anxiety describe nightmares, insomnia, digestive problems, and headaches. Therapists find themselves helping their patients through a process that feels less like an election than a national nervous breakdown.

There is, of course, no way to quantify the scope of mental anguish caused by Trump’s campaign; these stories are entirely anecdotal. There are, however, a lot of anecdotes, as I discovered when I started speaking to both therapists and panicking voters. I’ve covered four elections as a journalist, but this is the first one to regularly poison my dreams; at least once a week I wake up in the middle of the night in clammy, agitated horror. I was curious if other people were suffering in similar ways, so I reached out to a therapist I know. She queried two email lists of mostly New York–based colleagues, asking them to contact me if they’d seen Trump-related distress in their practices. Responses quickly started pouring in; soon I had almost a dozen.

Some of the therapists told me they are talking their patients through their Trump terror while trying not to succumb to it themselves. “The therapists that I know are pretty overwhelmed by managing their personal feelings, which we have to do and we’re doing, but it’s a lot,” says psychologist Heather Silvestri.

I see a business opportunity here selling 'safe spaces' to people traumatized by Trump.

Maybe Slate will commit suicide when President Trump takes office.

When a person has spent their entire adult life in la la land they become traumatized at the prospect of losing their fantasy. We need interventions for liberals and extensive mental health services for those traumatized by the adults taking over the playpen.

I’m buying stock in companies that manufacture anti-anxiety/depression drugs in anticipation of a Trump victory.

In sociology and psychology, mass hysteria (also known as collective hysteria, group hysteria, or collective obsessional behavior) is a phenomenon that transmits collective allusions of threats etc., whether real or imaginary, through a population in society as a result of rumors and fear (memory acknowledgment).

These people are mentally unstable - and they’re close to HALF of our population!

And. They. Vote. Aarrgghhhh!

Seriously? America (barely) survived 0bama; now we can survive and thrive under Trump. I hope he says something along the lines of, ‘And to those of you who didn’t vote for me, we are going to drag you along with us, kicking and screaming and improve your quality of life, whether you want it, or not!’

We will NOT survive as a Nation under, ‘She Who Shall Not Be Named.’

Great. Now *I* sound crazy, LOL!

please, they were delusional with obama and still don’t want to face truths in life. like a bunch of toddlers running around in adult minds/bodies, end up hurting themselves, and others in the process.

This does not qualify as mass hysteria, but it does reflect the triumph of the histrionic style among "progressives," who over value feelings at the expense of rational thinking.

The "psychologists," who apparently share their patients' pathology, need some serious supervision.

What’s really weird is that even if Trump is elected, it is unlikely that anything will actually change for these people. They will just feeeeeeel.

Hmmmm. Maybe the airlines are anticipating a windfall with all the ‘skerred’ people planning on bailing out on the US when Trump wins. “They” will have to build hollyweird east somewhere in the EU(pronounced yewwww). If you ever thought hildabama was psycho before, just wait until late in the evening of Nov 8. when the msm has no choice but to declare Trump the winner. There won’t be an ashtray or vase safe anywhere within a mile radius.

How about those black trash bags with the yellow draw string?

They could climb inside them and draw them closed while sitting at the curb on trash day.

Everyone wins!
