Russia has confirmed it has sent an S-300 air defence missile system to its naval base in Syria's port of Tartus.
Defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the purpose of the system was to guarantee the security of the base from the air.
The move comes amid growing tension with the West. On Monday, the US halted talks with Russia on trying to co-ordinate air strikes against jihadists.

“Better than anything we have.”
Don’t kid yourself
It was 65 that we killed and wounded 100 more Syria troops. An act of war against Syria. I was perplexed how Kerry and the State Office handled this as if it was all Syria’s fault tht we bombed them. Uh, it’ Syria’s country, not ours
The Russians are in Syria by long standing treaty with the Internationally recognized legal government of Syria, that is, Assad’s government.
LOL. Using your logic the kenyan is free to send a few nukes to the “internationally recognized legal government” in Ukraine under the Budapest agreement.
I bet you’d love that, Russian Navy Patriot. You boot licking Putinists never stop playing checkers without thinking about how your parlor game ends. LMAO.
valid point. but obama doesn’t want a FEW head choppers.
He wants a lot
And Russia didn’t give Iran billions in frozen funds and end sanctions AND let them work secretly on nukes after the deal.
We did.
We’ve managed to avoid war with Russia for 70 years and they are not going to want to go to war the first time we blow an iranian ship straight back to hell.
Sure, George, I'll have a spot in the bunker reserved for Lodi, he's a Sunni after all.
Currently, those best interests are stability and the reduction of terrorist Islamic organizations and individuals, and the expansion of secular Arab, Persian, and Turkish authoritarian heads of state who seek stability and trade.
Clinton seeks absolute power and wealth at any cost, ... for anyone else.
I seriously doubt the Russians would train or let Syrians operate these advanced missiles. 99.44 percent odds Syrians aren’t even allowed to sweep the floor anywhere near them. Just saying. This is a Russian installation to protect Russian operations from threats by O primarily
“Can they shoot down raptors, with the best pilots in the world flying them?”
Probably so. We are the masters at aircraft operation and penetrating to targets because that’s what our military is designed for...deployment and attack.
The Russians are poor at power projection, but are the masters at Air Defense with missiles. That is because their military is designed to defend the homeland from penetration and attack.
Its foolish to think our Air Force is so good that its immune to S-300 and 400 based defenses. Any USAF pilot, anywhere will tell you that’s one damned spooky system.
The thing is so fast, so powerful in guidance, and with such an envelope that it nearly violates the ABM treaty.
An F-111 pilot friend of mine said that essentially the later model S-300 is what doomed the F-111 to retirement. Don’t kid yourself.
Its a classic immovable object meeting irresistible force story when you talk about the F-22 vs modern Russian SAMs. No better than a toss up.
And with any older airframes, its no contest.
“Its a shame we started this war which was nothing more than a small insurgency that Assad could have crushed.”
Hell, we started the insurgency too! It began with a 300 million plus USAID grant to develop political opposition.
It’s really simple actually. Corrupt govts lie to the citizens, and with a compliant media, it’s easy. That’s what we have.
Yes, and along with the United States and France, Russia has been hurt by acts of terror.
Russian Navy Goober, better start your snark on Pence. He just supported US air strikes in Syria. LMAO.
I also missed it. When did it happen?
It may be hard to outrun or out-manuever hypersonic (mach 5 to 8) missiles.
