California soldiers ordered to repay enlistment bonuses

Nearly 10,000 California National Guard soldiers have been ordered to repay huge enlistment bonuses a decade after signing up to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The Pentagon demanded the money back after audits revealed overpayments by the California Guard under pressure to fill ranks and hit enlistment goals. If soldiers refuse, they could face interest charges, wage garnishments and tax liens, the Los Angeles Times said.

If you are an illegal alien in California the state will grant you free education, free medical care, free college tuition, and on and on. If you are an American citizen in California who honorably served in the armed forces you somehow are a thief and must make restitution. Wonder if they will go after the families of those killed in action?

A similar thing happened during Desert Storm. They called a lot of people back. We had to buy new uniforms and were given advanced pay to do so (Yes, we buy our uniforms. You may be given uniforms in a combat zone, assuming the action you are in is a war, which this wasn’t). Things ended quickly. The recalled service members were released and had to pay back the advanced pay. You could not draw your GI Bill until you paid it back.

Those who have bled for this country get spit on while the state lavishes our money on unworthy foreigners both here and abroad.

I’ve never been in the service but I work with active duty soldiers every day. Morale in the military is very very low.

I don’t see that and I work on post every day. Neither low nor high. Somewhere in between.

In the recently-passed California budget there are $40 million dollars set aside for a program that begins to extend health coverage to children of illegal aliens beginning in May 2016, with the program set to ramp up to a whopping $132 million for the 2016-17 budget year.

$132 million for illegal alien health care but no money for veterans.

I find this appalling. The Guard at orders from the top paid bonuses up front. This is not the soldiers or airmens or sailors fault. Fre cryin out loud, they risked their lives.

I say let em keep the money... at least then the Feds won’t have it to spendinon some gang member from south of the border or some jihadi from across the pond

If the military offered enlistment bonuses, how is this different than any civil contract? You can’t just claim that you changed your mind a decade later. A decent lawyer ought to be able to stop this garbage.

Of Course. The Democrats want this globalization which can only come to pass with a weakened Military.

This story is so devoid of the underlying facts that I have no clue what is going on. I will surmise ( because of the crappy journalism) that you got a 15k sign up bonus. Instead that crappy government started send out amounts in excess of the contract amount — for example 35k. These are contracts under state law— I don’t understand how the 4 years statute of limitations did not run in California . I don’t understand and congressional authority to garnish wages. But then the aerticle is so poor we can only guess.

California Senate Overwhelmingly Passes $330M Film & TV Tax Credit Expansion

$330 million to California’s film industry. Welfare for millionaires. No money for California’s vets.

The needs to stop and everyone repaid, with interest. The bonuses were issued in good faith, were received in good faith. No one lied, cheated, or stealed these bonus. The soldiers did their part. It is wrong and embarrassing that the government now asks and threatens to get the money back.

It’s how the state pays for the free education, free medical care, free college tuition, and on and on.
They throw the tax leaches in the working class.

Enough of these stories and recruitment will be even more difficult.
