I recall stopping a thug on my dorm floor who came into my room uninvited intending to drag my undersized first week of classes room mate into the showers. I pulled a blade on him and made it clear he'd get cut if he tried. Later discovered that room mate had a fourth degree black belt in Karate and was extremely amused that I had "protected" him. We certainly weren't up to the standards of our Depression and WWII parents. But we weren't exactly wimps either.
