Exclusive – Rep. Huelskamp: Speaker Ryan Does Not Have 218 Votes
Breitbart ^ | November 11, 2016 | NEIL W. MCCABE

Posted on 11/11/2016 5:01:26 PM PST by maggief

The chairman of the House Tea Party Caucus and one of the first men to come out against Speaker John A. Boehner told Breitbart News that he does not think Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R.-Wis.) has the votes to keep his gavel.

“I just don’t think he has the votes,” said Rep. Timothy A. Huelskamp (R.-Kansas), who lost his primary Aug. 2 and returns to private life after this session of Congress.

Huelskamp said he is concerned that the House Republican leadership is in a hurry to, first, get itself rubber-stamped inside the conference and then to proceed with an aggressive lame duck agenda.

Many House conservatives have called for the leadership elections to be moved forward from the scheduled Nov. 15 event, he said.

It is important to watch what the GOP leadership does before returning Ryan, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip Steve Scalise, and Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers to their posts, he said.

The conference elections are by voice vote, which masks the weakness of Ryan’s support with House Republicans and could be chaotic if and when he fails to reach the required 218 votes when the new Congress meets.

“There is no doubt Ryan has the support of the majority of the conference, but we will not find out if he has enough until January,” he said.

“You got to have 218,” the congressman said. “Just because you have 215 doesn’t get you 218.

Huelskamp said he does not know who could possibly emerge as a rival to Ryan, but that also does not matter because the House rules do not require an opponent for someone to lose; all that is required is the 218 threshold.

If Trump wants Ryan gone, he’s gone.

The election was not a mandate for Ryan.
It was a mandate for Trump.

If Ryan continues to be Speaker, it will be because of the reasons
you mentioned.

We shall see in January after the lame duck if Ryan becomes Trumps
useful idiot or is voted out. And a lot of that depends on Ryan lame duck
performance.

Folks need to get attuned to a particular item not getting much coverage.

The debt ceiling needs to be raised about February.

Who is going to get that thru a 100% GOP govt?

These clowns have GOT to act with the presumption that they have ONE TWO-YEAR SHOT to get this right. Use the next two years to maximum advantage, with the entire Congress. Don’t presume anything about what the makeup will be in 2018/2020 or 2022, because a bird in the hand is worth a million in the faraway bush.

“Time is at a premium at the beginning of a President’s term.”

Bingo. That’s why Ryan needs to go.

If not, Trump will spend his first 100 days “debating” with him.

Ryan is pro amnesty, pro TPP, pro NAFTA, against building the wall, etc. Only a fool would think that it’s a good idea for him to stay.

Yes, I’m quite soured on Ryan, and, by extension, the Heritage Foundation, of which he is a product. My hopes were high, but a tree is known by its fruit.

Anyone have any thoughts about Heritage to make me rethink my stance?

Just saw an interview with Tom Cole who said he's been on multiple House Republican conference calls in the last 48 hours and hasn't gotten a whiff of opposition to Ryan as speaker.

In fact, he didn't limit it to Ryan, he referenced the entire House leadership as being secure.

I like Tim. He took a stand knowing that it would likely end his time in the House. He stood up to the farm welfare lobby, and that aint easy!!

Cut welfare. Cut farmer welfare!

Ryan is still in the pockets of the GOPe. He will be nothing but a rubber stamp for Obama and a road block for the Trump Presidency.

“Ryan needs to go. It will be a loud shot across McConnell’s bow that he’ll be next if he doesn’t play by President Trump’s rules.”

Actually, Mc Scrotumneck is pond scum when put alongside Ryno. He personifies all that is wrong with the GOPe.

If the GOP can manage to help Trump with his plan, 2018 will be an election that will strengthen their hold on the Senate because the election for the RATs will be like this one was for the Pubbies. The RATs have twice the number of seats at stake.

The RATs have twice the number of seats at stake.

Tread carefully on the meme of numbers being on our side.

The left overconfidently proceeded in this campaign, Canky can't lose, and then against all the polls, odds, pundits, hollyweird, enemedia, got trounced.

We need to win the Senate in 2018 because 2016/2017 were successful in its own right.

I believe Ryan is still eyeing a 2020 pres run so I wouldn’t put anything past him. He will stop one of trumps bills and the media will angle it as trump being unreasonable. Count on it.
