If Jeff Sessions leaves the Senate, who replaces him?

"...If Sessions heads to the Trump administration, he would leave behind a coveted seat in the United States Senate. Governor Bentley would appoint Sessions's replacement in the short-term and set a date for a statewide election to fill the seat.

Given the importance of the seat, we certainly shouldn't rush this. Bentley ought to appoint someone with an eye toward an election being held during the 2018 midterms. Special elections are expensive and often feature low turnout. With most of us experiencing campaign exhaustion, it's prudent to set the election during a normal cycle.

So whom might Bentley appoint if Sessions departs? Several sources I've spoken with suggest a few names on an emerging short list: Representative Martha Roby, Attorney General Luther Strange, state senator Trip Pittman, and state senator Cam Ward.

Like Bentley, Martha Roby didn't back Donald Trump. ..."

if you move to Alabama you would be hard pressed to find ANY decent Italian food, especially Italian sausage. That’s the real reason you ought to stay in Richmond County......

Bentley is on very thin ice in The State of Alabama.

He best not be rocking any boats or making any waves.

I’m concerned if there will be enough Republicans left in the senate to vote for Supreme Court Justice.

Yeah that’s a deal breaker.

I need at least 3 italian delis within a half mile of the house.

And restaurants where the waiters still speak broken English and my Italian is better than their English :)

ubama already showed what the DOJ can do with or without the Senate. When ideologues like Janet Reno, Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch are AG’s they just about do whatever they darned well want to.

Even constrained by an honest respect for the rule of law, Sessions as Attorney General, can do much more to enforce the CURRENT AND EFFECTIVE immigration laws, than he could ever do as a Senator from Alabama (who always had to overcome weak RINO’s and the Gang of 8 enablers.).

“Why not Giuliani for AG?”

The NRA/GOA and 100 more sane groups would scream from the rooftops...NO!

The Dems got shalacked in WV and they have a Senator, he’s going to want to get along with the Trump agenda. The same is true of other Democrats. That being said, Alabama is Republican. The bigger concern is the type of Republican the anti-Trump Governor will select

“Given the importance of the seat, we certainly shouldn’t rush this.”

I respectfully disagree. While it is important who the replacement ends up being, it should not take more than a few weeks to make the appointment. We need a solid guy in the Senate on day one to help push though President Trump’s agenda. There is a need for speed here.

“Bentley is on very thin ice in The State of Alabama.”

I see he’s in his second term as governor. Is he termed out? It would make a difference perhaps if he has to go before the voters again.

Yes, we went there first time two years ago. Love the Redneck Riviera . . . but with me and my two kids lily white skin . . . we’re not much on the beach for long periods of time. It is nice though. Much better than the coast of my home state of TX.
