Here in NJ there are efforts to re-settle cities with white people (Newark, Asbury Park); it isn’t true gentrification because they don’t push people out - they’re just trying to get residents that don’t crap on the sidewalks, etc.

The Newark Valentine’s Day giveaway (where they offered property lots for about $1K IIRC - with the stipulation that they build on it within a certain amount of time), Newark’s “teachers village”, and Asbury Park’s pitch to become a “gay haven” - they recently demolished a hotel they started building years ago and then abandoned when it because clear that they NYC gay clientele they sought to attract wasn’t coming (probably due to the fact that the local denizens weren’t being forced out - they’d be a couple of blocks away).

This was an atrocity caused by a bunch of hippies illegally occupying totally unsuitable structure, converting it to multiple residences and artists' pads, failing to comply with the most rudimentary fire safety precautions, and a liberal city government that utterly failed to fulfill its legal obligations to enforce the law.

More codes or laws wouldn’t have helped. They’re in violation of several codes, have had the law out frequently. The problem, as often is, the powers-that-be did not have the WILL to ENFORCE the law.

I doubt Oakland officials are going to pursue this too stringently. These types of illegal housing accommodations are the only way a lot of residents can afford to live in the area.

I’ve been reading various accounts. That this building went up in flames is no surprise to anyone with the possible exception of some of its more gullible residents. This building has been a known violator for a long time. The media refers to various violations but never a resolution. There wasn’t one. Until Saturday night’s fire.
