Next class will be called, “The chances of surviving life in Southside Chicago. Why Black Live Don’t Matter outside of killing cops.”

It will be interesting to see how many self hating snowflakes take the class.

understand how whiteness is socially constructed and experienced

I wonder if they are going to cover the part about being raised in a two parent home where honesty, responsibility, industry and creativity were nurtured in love. Where education was valued and demonstrated. Hard work was also valued. Where each was able to keep the fruits of their labor. And by me experiencing this somehow someone is oppressed?

Oh, but then again there is the problem of whiteness that comes in my genes.

As a manager at a major computer manufacturing and solutions firm, I had the opportunity to hire summer interns to work on some of my "back burner" projects. I hired the best from MIT, Cal, Stanford, Cal-Tech... etc. These young engineers were fantastic. They were creative, understood experimentation, instrumentation and data analysis. Some of them even left to go back to the university with patents submitted.

Someone in HR decided that the program would be better as an affirmative action effort. I tried for two years to deal with the affirmative action students. They would not come to work on time or often at all. They made no effort to understand what we were trying to accomplish. They would not take advice or instruction. At the end of the summer we had nothing to show for their efforts. I gave up and never applied for another summer intern.

I was born in Madison & raised in Middleton, on a farm, 7 miles from the capitol building.

I am SOOO glad that I don’t live anywhere near thee anymore.

First of all, the people who populated Wisconsin were Norwegians ( I am), Swedes, Danish, Polish, Germans-—all of them of lighter skin color.

In fact, the county where Madison & the UW are located is called DANE county! Pretty sure it wasn’t named after a dog breed.

The idiots who are attending the UW are embarrassing themselves. At this point, I would NOT hire a UW grad for any job I had.

Problems?

I can’t jump, and I get sunburned easily.

Ah, yes. I remember now. Been a few decades since the O.B.E. push in the schools, where I was introduced to crowd shaming and Delphi technique for the opposition: ‘us’. The French guys were mentioned as early pioneers.

Turned out OK, though: the brain-mash was the inspiration for homeschooling the kids. Every dark cloud.......:^)

TX for the refresher!

I am not an HR person,so I don't know all the rules. From what I've read, interns aren't suppose to do any substantial work for the company. They are there to observe and do light duties such as answering phones and making coffee to see what the work is all about. If you need them to actually do something, you need to hire them part time...

Thanks for your input. I was involved in the Summer Student Associate program in the mid and late 80’s. I am sure that a lot has changed.

I was dealing with some of the nation’s brightest College Juniors in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Material Science, and Physics. I had them working on my back burner projects that any good manager has in his back pocket. The projects were challenging and interesting if not “main stream”. Asking them to answer phones or make coffee was not going to cut it. Sorry.

Nathan Dane was a Massachusetts delegate to the Congress of the Confederation. Unlike most of the state, that area was heavily colonized by Cornish lead mining families from New England. They are the ones that dug burrow homes and forever labeled us as badgers.
