Trump Wins Again: House GOP Reverses On Ethics Office Overhaul
ZeroHedge ^

Posted on 01/03/2017 10:01:25 AM PST by hotsteppa

President-elect Trump is on a roll today. Following House Republican's vote to strip the Ethics Office of independence, Trump lashed out with a tweet suggesting Congress' time be better spent on other things... and just minutes ago, following an emergency meeting, Republicans have confirmed the amendment has been pulled.

As a reminder, House Republicans abruptly voted on Monday night to eliminate the independence of the Office of Congressional Ethics, the chamber’s nonpartisan ethics board which investigates lawmakers' alleged misconduct, largely stripping it of its power, leading to pushback from Democrats and government watchdog groups. House Republicans, meeting as a group Monday night, approved an amendment from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte that would place the office under the oversight of the lawmaker-run House Ethics Committee.

As Trump tweeted this morning:

“With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority.

Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS”

Good for Trump. The stupid party remains stupid. There are arguments why these ethics changes needed to be made, but the GOP handled it terribly and did attempt to make the changes in the night. They have handed Pelosi and the rest of the Rats a golden freebee to bash the Republicans.

You aren’t very good on the idea of appearance and positioning, just like the house republicans. Of ALL the things you could do with the new congress, THIS is the first thing you do after a major change election (including drain the swamp)?

Trump is the most masterful strategist this Republic has seen since Washington.

Whilst the Rats on the hill are barely able to concentrate beyond their next meal, Trump is thinking in strategic terms - 1, 2, 8 or even 50 years from now.

The man is far ahead of any politicians we have ever seen.

“Monday night, House Republicans voted 119-74 during a closed-door meeting in favor of Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s proposal, which would place the independent Office of Congressional Ethics under the control of those very lawmakers.”

Ugh, for once the GOP actually got something right and was axing a useless block for investigating corruption, and now it is back. Oh well, more employment for relatives of those who are sitting in congress.

Trump may have done this strictly because of the optics problem.

If so, I understand his reaction. However I suspect there is a Dem plot in the works to ABUSE this redundant ethics committee --which allowed the filing of anonymous complaints from the public-- to tie innocent Republicans in knots.

Remember how they used something similar to take Sarah Palin out of office? This is how it worked: Dem operatives filed hundreds of ethics complaints against Gov Palin. ALL frivolous, of course. But the effect was to keep Palin preoccupied with defending herself. And she was not allowed to use gov't funds to do so.

That was the real reason that Sarah Palin --a good, competent and ethical governor-- had to choose to resign. The so-called ethics process kept her from being able to do her job.

I think a similar abuse of process is being planned by Dems in Congress. Hence the Repubs' attempt to reform the process.

For once I disagree w/Trump and agree with the original action of the House Republicans. This “nonpartisan” ethics committee was a Nancy Pelosi construct. Need more be said?

“President-elect Donald Trump dramatically strong-armed House Republicans into line Tuesday in his first Washington power play, after they voted to gut an ethics watchdog in a manner that undercut his vow to drain the establishment ‘swamp.’

“Trump made clear his anger at the move on his Twitter account, and GOP lawmakers hurriedly changed plans to target the independent panel, backing down in a controversy that threatened to overshadow the dawn of a new conservative era in Washington.”

^^^^ This! It needs to be fixed as it is open to abuse with anonymous complaints, etc. but it was done in a closed meeting at night without both parties present. It just looks bad and since both parties were supposedly interested in changing this anyway why not do it out in the open? Duh, the stupid party strikes again.
