A proposed student resolution to ban Sabra company products from the dining hall of a California university is about more than hummus, the campus rabbi leading the opposition to the boycott told The Algemeiner.
People ask what the big deal is, because even if the motion does pass the University of California Riverside Student Senate, its up to administrators to decide what is served at the school, said Chabad on Campus director Rabbi Matisyahu Devlin, ahead of Wednesdays vote. But Jewish students are afraid; they are disturbed. If the motion passes, the message is clear: We dont want you here, even your hummus.
Devlin said that some students are telling him they may stop openly identifying as Jewish on campus if the motion passes.
Even though Sabra is an American-based brand, people associate it with Israel and Jews, he added. This vote is about banning a Jewish product, Jewish business.
The rabbi told The Algemeiner that the effort to block the motion has been a joint project of Chabad, Hillel, the AEPi fraternity and advocacy groups Stand With Us and Israel on Campus Coalition.
Everyone is getting involved in trying to make sure this vote doesnt go through. Jews from all backgrounds are speaking out, and many non-Jews are joining us, he said. I have had a lot of nachas (pride) watching my students at work.
The motion is being brought by the schools chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, which succeeded in getting Sabra banned from UC Riverside in 2015, by going straight to dining services with a complaint. The group was disappointed, however, when school administrators quickly called the decision a mistake.
Devlin said, Since that time, the anti-Israel movement on campus has been growing. Right now, they are working to bring Israeli Apartheid Week to the school.
He said that he is optimistic about being able to block the motion, but noted that SJP has allies and at least one vote in the Student Senate.
In May 2015, as was reported in The Algemeiner, the Salomon Center for American Jewish Thought confirmed that UC Riverside was offering a course that met the State Departments definition of antisemitism. The course Palestinian Voices, a student-initiated class whose syllabus reveals a different and more controversial title: Palestine & Israel: Settler-Colonialism and Apartheid raised concern among 20 campus watchdog groups.

Didn’t we kill a few hundred thousand Jew-haters about 70 years ago, then track down their leaders to the ends of the earth? Maybe it’s time for these Jew-haters to realize they’re attacking the Living God.
I wonder if Sabra tastes good on Chic-fil-A?
How many of these Jewish students voted or supported hard left causes? It is the people the supported that are terrorizing them.
I had a good friend that was a Jewish friend in Grad school at UT Austin. Her family in Connecticut were afraid that the people in Texas would lynch her for being Jewish. Jews often have it completely backwards, They are afraid of the people that are their friends
The intolerant idiots need to be SHAMED! Unfortunately, I don’t think they know the meaning of the word.
Students for Justice in Palestine
There is NO SUCH PLACE, the people they claim to support are TERRORISTS, they should have been EXPELLED then DEPORTED!
And yet, life continues apace, rich and supremely satisfying.
Yet in the next breath, these so-called social justice warriors will huff and puff about Repubs and Trump being “Nazis”.
They need to make up their minds. Is it good (=don’t eat the hummus) to hate Jews, or is it bad (=their version of Repubs)? Talk about schizophrenia!
Is this the group that Fordham U banned from pushing their agenda?
I don’t particularly like Hummus, but it looks like I need to buy some Sabra because they have the right enemies.
Use logic, common sense and follow the Constitution, but leave any religion or other fairy tale “beliefs” out of government and education.
especially since Obama brought so many of his IslamoNazi BF’s into USA, the situation for Jews and Christians on many American college campuses (campii?) has gotten worse and worse and worse. The first place the IslamoNazis want to hang out is on campuses...where they’re “protected” by “free speech rules” and administrators that refuse (or are just afraid) to do their jobs. And, the Islamics get free meeting space and tons of unkowledgeable “prey” (students and faculty and street persons/bums all alike) who believe a whole lot of the lies that the Islamics feed them.
Result: many Americans are now afraid to walk on campus (and some are scared away from enrolling or applying to work there, too).
And its getting worse. Governor Brown has done almost nothing to clean up the excesses/mess/intimidations/threats against American students and faculty...and the problem is especially bad at places like UC, UCLA, UCI, UCSD, and SFState.
A little more helpful leadership to clean up the Islamic problem at CA’s colleges would be so nice to see come from CA’s nice Jesuit governor. How about it, Jerry?
The Basil Pesto and Chipotle flavored Sabra Hummus' are FANTASTIC on Chicken!
exactly right!
I buy Sabra with pride.
Boycott Hamas-supporting Chobani.
Man, I wish I read the article, before spouting off.
we love Sabra hummas on rye bread but it is good on just about everything
never tried it on ChicFil-A’s tho. Only because we don’t have a ChicFil-A nearby. Alas! I’d trade our 669 local Star*ucks for just one ChicFilA! smile smile smile
Sabra is dead to you? Perhaps you should read the article a little more closely.
