Purge outdated voter rolls? NYC tried it, with bad results

Whether or not you believe that voting fraud is a problem in the U.S., one thing is certain: Tidying up outdated voter rolls is sometimes easier said than done. Just ask election officials in the nation’s largest city.

After an independent review found that New York City’s voting lists contained people who were dead or in prison, elections officials began an aggressive purge in 2014 and 2015 that eliminated more than 200,000 supposedly invalid registrations. The result? A record number of complaints during the 2016 presidential primary from legal voters who turned up to cast a ballot, but found that they were no longer registered.

“Democracy itself is under attack,” New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a Democrat, declared last week after announcing plans to join a federal lawsuit over the way the purge was handled.

New York City’s bungled purge offers a cautionary tale for elected officials, led by President Donald Trump, who warn that inaccurate voter rolls are leading to voter fraud across America. …

I don’t see what the big deal is?

My town sends every household a form every 2 years listing each person living at the residence, and with a check mark indicating whether or not each individual is registered to vote.

Each household is required to update the form and send it back to town hall. Failure to do so results in automatic removal from the registration rolls.

Really, it’s not that hard.

I couldn't find an actual number to demonstrate what the "record number" of complaints was....or if they had other problems actually voting. Funny how they make lofty claims but are afraid to publish the actual facts and numbers....

If you haven’t voted in New York in a certain number of years, you get a letter informing you that unless you contest it, you will be removed from the rolls.

This went back and forth over the years, as people started claiming it was discouraging people from voting if they hadn’t voted in a while. It became illegal, then it became legal again, with some tweaks.

I would guess that if the letter goes back to them and is not forwarded, then that is understood as not being contested.

They can also vote on a provisional ballot.

Yes. The guy who told about the buses that used to go from poll to poll. Then he explained why they use a more subtle means of fraud now.

Of course he was fired instead of the problem being fixed.

It should be corrected anyway, because some unscrupulous person can notice it and vote for you at the end of the day if you haven’t shown up.

Purge every voter roll across the country. Make people re-register to vote. It’s fair for everyone since everyone is impacted.

With the new voter-protection laws (and also as a matter of ethics, I think), there has to be a balance between fraud detection methods and discouraging the voter.

There are many elderly (possibly forgetful) people and disabled people who are fully entitled to vote. Plus the uneducated are probably more easily discouraged when a new obligation is introduced, or may not even hear about it.

There actually are some legitimate concerns with discouraging voting. I think NY handled it well. They came back with a new procedure that has seemed to satisfy everyone for now.

Never got a letter. Maybe they purged me. They did once when I actually WAS a NY voter.

Supply the voter with a new registration card every two year voting cycle.
Mail it out to their voter registration address with no forwarding. If
returned then remove the name from the voter roles.

There's still a ballot in your name that is voted after the polls close.

A suggestion? Don’t have affirmative action morons running and designing the revamp of your voter’s list.

Maybe. There are few close elections in New York, so maybe not. But it’s best to get yourself off the rolls.

A record number of complaints!!!! What was the prior record??? Two???

Exactly how many of the 200,000 supposedly invalid registrations were actually valid??? Three???

My thoughts exactly.

Let the supposedly disenfranchised voters cast a provisional ballot until their registration status is cleared up. No big deal.

I’ve been wondering that myself. It’s a long list of accounts and programs that become inaccessible immediately upon SSA’s receipt of the Death Certificate.

“””I couldn’t find an actual number to demonstrate what the “record number” of complaints was”””

My guess is that the prior record was two complaints and this time when they purged 200,000 registrations they got three complaints.

We both know if it was a really large number of complaints the writer of this fiction would have put the number in the headline.

In districts where RATs are in charge I would expect that they would make some “mistakes” and remove some of the R voters who show up every time. Then they’ll just say “oops!” when the “mistake” is discovered.

No it's not you drama queen. How many legitimate complaints were there exactly? Were those people denied the right to vote? I doubt it. Perhaps the best thing to do is require everyone to re-register and check their credentials at the time they re-register. Add the caveat that anyone attempting to register illegitimately will be prosecuted.

Absolute most absurd reason ever not to purge illegal voter rolls.

"Sorry citizens, we have an incompetent bureaucracy, and you can't force us to fix that impediment!"
