McCain: Dictators 'get started by suppressing free press'
CNN ^ | 2/20/17 | Eugene Scott

Sen. John McCain slammed President Donald Trump's attacks on the media this week by noting dictators "get started by suppressing free press."

It was a startling observation from a sitting member of Congress against the President of the United States, especially considering McCain is a member of Trump's party.

"I hate the press," the Arizona Republican sarcastically told NBC News' Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press." "I hate you especially. But the fact is we need you. We need a free press. We must have it. It's vital."

John McCain needs a good sit down with the leadership of his party.

He is unfit to sit on any committees. Any that he chairs should be given to someone with half a clue

If this keeps up, John should be removed from the Senate.

That is long past due.

Senator McCain, you might want to read one very specific chapter from Alvin Toffler's seminal book The Third Wave: "De-Massifying the Media."

Written in 1980, it showed how as communication technologies improve, the days of mass media companies being relevant are coming to an end. And today, we have a President that clearly knows that and uses the modern Internet (and cellphones that connect to the Internet) to bypass the "filter" of the Establishment Media. No wonder why the Establishment Media acts upset: technology has made them just about obsolete.

McCain is correct.

That is what Obama tried to do, with considerable success. That it wasn’t total was due to FOX, AM radio, and the internet.

“John McCain needs a good sit down with the leadership of his party.”

Won’t do much good. He is old school Republican and Trump has upset the apple cart. McCain may have failed at his own bid for the presidency but we can be sure he and other senior Republicans have drilled into the skulls of the younger Republicans that the seniors are the kingmakers of the Republican Party (same in Democrat party). No matter how idealistic or accomplished the new Republican politician was, he or she were expected to take marching orders from the seniors if they wanted to progress in the party and have a go at the golden ring of the presidency. In McCain we are seeing the wrath of a deposed actual dictator.

Dictators confiscate all the guns first.

The old saying, “Sticks and stones....”

But an armed resistance is a whole other matter.

If this keeps up, John should be removed from the Senate.

McCain should have been voted out of the Senate in Arizona's Republican primaries years ago. The fact that he wasn't, in spite of AZ being a very conservative state, says a lot about the power of political parties to keep incumbents in office. The same thing applies in SC with Lindsey Graham.

John - did you ever get all those POW’s that were begging you to?

I noticed the ‘free press’ didn’t feel the need to inform the public on that one.

The ‘free press’ didn’t tell the true story of your shameful military record either, eh John?

How ‘bout you come clean on your own?

Contrary to what John McCain seems to assert, free press is not being suppressed. Not one news organization as been shut down, no news rooms have been raided. The press is every bit as free as ever it has been.

But the press is being called to account, and Trump is calling bullsh*t on a lot of what they have been promoting, between either not reporting at all, or presenting such a totally distorted picture of what actually happened, that it qualifies as “fake news”.

A lie remains just as much of a lie, whether it be a sin of commission, or a sin of omission. Either way, “fake news” is a violation of the Ninth Commandment. Murder, adultery, and stealing, dealing respectively with life, virtue, and property, are generally considered more serious offenses before the law than the bearing of false witness (lying). And yet, what the latter may lack in severity, it more than makes up for in prevalence.

Stupid people still can be bought and paid for. It is not an either/or, in McCain’s instance.

McCain can't recognize the difference between a President criticizing the press and a President suppressing it. I think it's because McCain tends to project: if McCain were President, he would try to actively suppress any and all criticism of him through extra-legal means.
