U.S. Airlines Flee Castro's Island Hellhole

Which is a fancy way of saying what's really going on - Cuba is a tourist hellhole. The service stinks, the amenities are gross, the place is thick with thieves and woman-gropers, the cost is high and the alternatives are out there, In fact, the Caribbean is loaded with pleasant, accommodating destinations well worth a tourist's dollar for a vacation. Taking a vacation at a communist military-run resort really falls more into the Gulag category.

How is this for tourist hell? Observers noticed Cuban customs officials rummaging through tourist luggage and taking what they wanted. When they complained, they were thrown in jail. Some tourist operation they've got there, In fact, the place is a security risk because no professional or U.S. or U.S.-standard officials are involved. Mangy street dogs are what pass for security dogs in Havana. You can expect cockroaches in your breakfast cereal and tourist bulletin boards such as this one say bring your own toilet paper.

Cuba's officials aren't even interested in making their foreign investors happy. American businesses have but one purpose, according to reports, that is to serve through their presence in Havana as bait to attract other sucker businesses, the better to rob them all.

I'll bet that your NYC liberal colleague voted for that self-avowed Communist, Bill DeBlasio for mayor. I can guarantee you that's who he voted for.

Lefties think communism is great unless they have to live under it's oppressive iron fist and jack-booted thugs.

“What do you think of our revolution”

Fifty years after the American Revolution the USA was an up and coming economic power in the world.

Fifty years after the Cuban Communist takeover they still can’t make “La Revo-loos-s-ion” work.

Having worked on a RCCL cruise ship for 10 months, 6 of which were in the Caribbean, I have a rather jaded view of most Carib destinations. That is NOT to say they are not decent places to go if you have not been to each of them 5-40 times like I have. So I am not counter-recommending them or anything.

But I *will* say that while each has something slightly different, there is a LOT they have in common, primarily, crushing poverty esp once you get out of the tourist zones. Although I never felt like any particular area was dangerous, it was clear that if you went far away from touristy areas you COULD place yourself in danger. That would be not be one iota different from Detroit or Philly by the way.

I’ve been to Cuba too. Apparently it hasn’t changed much. The toilet paper has always been a problem. Everywhere you go there’s someone with a card table inside the restroom doors selling you 2 squares for a buck. I never saw a door on a bathroom stall. We hired a driver in an old rusted out Datsun that was not a ‘government taxi’, to haul us around. The Malecon was full of hookers that would jump on your car if you slowed down. The once beautiful mansions that belonged to businessmen have all been turned into housing and have laundry hanging from all the windows. Electricity is so limited that our hotel room had a timer dial that turned it on for 2 hrs at a time. And last but not least the people. They’re everywhere. All over the streets and in front of homes. Because there’s no electricity and it’s hot they stay outside.
The country is a beautiful, Communist mess.

The cruise industry IS ALL IN. We haven’t seen or heard about the backlash on the cruise side, yet, it’s coming.

About a month ago Carnival changed about a dozen 2017 itineraries from Cayman Islands stops to Havana. That’s just from Tampa. Those will be empty.

I have no sympathy for these corporate money thugs.

It’s an adventure vacation!

Come and work in the sugarcane fields!

Spent a week in the lovely dungeons!

Build your own boat to sail back to America!

What fun!

Talked to a billionaire customer that went there just after it opened up last year. He can’t eat meat, and lives basically on fish.

The island paradise does not have fish. He mentioned at first he thought that was strange. Then he saw what he called the one of the most beautiful marina’s in the Havana. It did not have any boats. Then it hit him, all the boats that were there are in Miami.

No boats no fish.

Ahhh you’ve been there. lol We were on the plane with a lady who looked like she worked at a hotel. She had a see through, large trash bag full of partial rolls of toilet paper. Customs pulled her out of the line. lol

Oh crap, there goes any chance of tracing my family tree.

Not that I would want to support Communism in any way.

Canadians seem to love it, though. Perhaps anyplace above zero is appealing to them in the winter.

Kind of sounds like our TSA. One of the main reasons I refuse to fly.

Hmmmm.... Need to talk to one of my airline pilot gnomes and get the real skinny. Freepers do the same if you have them.

Also ask them about how flights to Israel are disappearing and how Dubai is becoming a hub making our majors potentially non-competitive, Dubai ports Part Deux IMHO....

Yet, our elite liberals will go there and come back singing the praises of Cuba re its free medical care and great schools.

They will praise the Cuban Commies for creatinga wonderful place for common people in this hellhole.

Every time I hear the phrase “Cuba this,” or “Castro that,” I reflect on the fact that we were unable or unwilling to terminate Fidel and the rest of his Communist thugs with extreme prejudice when we had the chance!

Cuba has been a story that does not end well since Castro took over.

Somehow, someway, Cuba has got to be wrested away FRom the Communists!

I worked with some people who sailed, and we did the Moorings 42 Catamaran rentals and sailed in the Abacos (yes, we did go to Nippers, much to my fun...and regret!) the Grenadines, the Virgin Islands,and...OMG.

Best. Vacations. Ever.

One of the guys who sailed knew all the little dinky out-of-the-way places to moor, the greasy spoon (and high end) places for dinner, etc. We had eight of us, all co-workers and spouses, it was the best.

Now a cruise ship...I have done that twice, and had fun, but...having also been on an aircraft carrier that pulled into port with 5000+ horny and thirsty sailors, well...I like the smaller approach better!
