Sonoma’s 3rd Ugly Tattoo Contest doubles as fundraiser for Planned Parenthood

Sonoma tattoo artist Shotsie Gorman and his wife, Kristine, decided to get a little political for their third annual Ugly Tattoo Contest, where some 15 people competed Sunday for the rare honor of having certifiably bad body art.

As in past iterations of the event, contestants were judged by a panel of tattoo artists who awarded cash for cover-up work to a few winners. But this year’s contest at B&V Whiskey Bar & Grille in Sonoma served another timely purpose: Funds from a raffle went to support Planned Parenthood Northern California, as the national organization faces the threat of losing its federal funding under plans from congressional lawmakers. The Gormans, who co-own the Tarot Art & Tattoo Gallery on Sonoma Highway, have organized events for Planned Parenthood before, and felt compelled by current events to do something for the organization at this year’s contest.

“Because of the political climate and the potential for the Republicans to completely flatten funding for Planned Parenthood, we thought we’d turn it over to them,” Shotsie Gorman said.

“They’ve helped so many people that I know in my life, and they have a history of helping women with health care issues who can’t afford normal health care.”

The free event was attended by more than 100 people, and funds from the $5 raffle tickets raised $370, according to Planned Parenthood philanthropy officer Adel Olvera. The raffle prizes were worth more than $2,500, Kristine Gorman said.

"...Ugly tattoo contest..."

The three judges have some pretty terrible tattoos themselves.
They very, very rarely stand the test of time on people. Sorry.

That is a different thing from the tattoo’s that cover so many fools from head to foot. I have no problem with a “101st Airborne” regimental tattoo.

Hey Shotsie what happened to your Obamacare? It was supposed to be affordable. And PP does very little health care, they just refer patients to other doctors. But they do kill babies.

And most tattoos are ugly especially more than a couple of feet away, just looks like a skin condition.

These people are somewhat unclear on the concept. Aborted babies won’t get ugly tattoos. And Tattoo artists don’t get paid for people who don’t exist.

You can’t have any kind of substantive political discussion with people who refer to abortion as “women’s health care” and the ability to sue Christian business owners out of existence as “protection for gays.”

So unless the tattoo is done for the sake of the dead, it’s OK. That commandment is one against idolatry.

How odd that given that clear directive, there has existed for centuries a tradition of Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land getting tattooed while in Jerusalem.

US ARMY 1969 to 1972 D Company, 1/502 Infantry (101st Air Mobile) 11 months at FSB Bastogne located at the north end of the A Shau gave me all the tattoo’s I needed to remember that time. Uncle Sam was nice enough to give me a funny looking little bronze thing with a V on it to help me remember. It goes nice with that little purple thing he gave me also. At least I can put them on or take them off, unlike a stupid tattoo.

Always have and always will believe that tattoos are a sign of anti-social behavior.

Nobody will ever beat Mr. Cool ice.

I like the added touch of the skeleton putting its hands under its chin as if it is saying in an effeminate way "Oh dear!" "Mr. Cool ice! Oh dear!" What is the correlation anyway between a skeleton and ice?

Tattos on a female serve as an early warning indicator. Tattoos say “STAY AWAY”.

It must work. After all these years I still do not have an STD.

A good portion of why the tattoo exists is to be ugly.

In military terms, it’s to intimidate others and share an intimidating image with others. Because let’s face it, if you need a permanent marking on your body to remember something, your memory is worse than mine, and I border on Alzheimers.

In non-military terms, once again it’s an ugly thing to signal to others that you are a badass (whether you are or not, doesn’t matter), or to signal to others that you are open to strangers touching your naked flesh to do visibly nasty things to it.

It’s become a fashion thing since 10 years ago, but that’s mainly because they’re a lot easier to remove than before. Not that they’re easy really, but (thanks to lasers) relatively easier with better results than before.

No. They all look like hematoma.
