Vice President Mike Pence forged ahead Sunday with his University of Norte Dame commencement speech as some in attendance walked out, encouraging the graduates to keep their religious faith, value the freedom of speech and saying the future is yours.
Pence, a former Indiana governor, was the most recent college campus speaker to face backlash or protest from students, faculty and others over ideological differences.
He was invited to speak at the Catholic school, in South Bend, Ind., after students and faculty objected to a prospective invitation to President Trump, who would have been the seventh U.S. president to give the commencement address.
Trump has faced harsh criticism for his anti-Islamic rhetoric during his presidential campaign and for his administration's efforts to impose a travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries.
Pence didnt acknowledge the planned walkout, in which dozens of students and family members reportedly left at the start of his speech and were booed.
But he alluded to clashes at campuses elsewhere that have derailed appearances by controversial speakers, such as conservative firebrand Ann Coulter at the University of California at Berkeley.
"This university is a vanguard of the freedom of expression and the free exchange of ideas at a time, sadly, when free speech and civility are waning on campuses across America," Pence said.
The rest of Pences speech also focused on faith and conservative principles like protecting Norte Dame and other groups from having to go against their religious beliefs to offer birth control coverage to employees under ObamaCare.
Just as Notre Dame has stood strong to protect its religious liberty, Im proud that this president just took steps to ensure that this university and the Little Sisters of the Poor could not be forced to violate their consciences to fully participate in American civic life,

They couldn’t get back in to obtain their diplomas. LOL!
It shouldnt be news when a dozen members of the LGBT club walk out.
I don’t know all that much about Pence, but he seems like a team player and a decent sort. Others have mentioned he’s solid, and I’ve pretty much accepted that.
He is not the sort that deserved people to walk out on him today. He has not been controversial, and he deserves to be heard.
The Left talks and talks and talks and talks about diversity. Then when someone with a diverse opinion from their opinion shows up, they throw a hiss-fit and walk away.
That’s what the safe rooms are all about. They are so intimidated by the idea someone might not agree with them, that they refuse to venture out in public so they can.
They demand to be safe from that sort of thing.
I pity the people who will have to deal with these social misfits after they graduate.
Interview after interview, they fail. Then they chalk it up to racism or some such. No, it’s because you outed yourself somewhere along the line, and the potential employer will want nothing to do with your agenda driven snivel.
Very rude and disrespectful, but that’s the MO of these snowflakes.
Hope all their names get published on the net and any future employers take note of it.
It’s really their loss, not his.
Most stayed - those who left left their diplomas behind. It should stay that way.
This is the school that wanted to hire Hillary’s buddy, Tarik/Tariq Ramadan, wasn’t it?
Yea verily.
Vice Admiral James Stockdale was my commencement speaker, and being a 20-ish libtard I considered boycotting the ceremony...but didn't.
So the regrets are only for the contemplation.
These days, with the way the instructors and the attitudes at colleges, colleges are just petri dishes for future swamp creatures.
They are Children of Hippies. They are aping their parents or friends parents.
Do unto others is apparently not part of the course work at Notre Dame.....
I regard Vice-President Pence very highly. President Trump gets major kudos for selecting him as a running mate, IMHO. The people who walked out improved the graduation by their departure.
I demand a ‘safe room’ from the lies of the lamestream media. It’s called turning off the news on my living room TV and watching retro TV shows instead.
I would have started singing “There goes Suzie Snowflake” as they walked out.
True enough, but you are refusing to listen to lies.
They refuse to listen to truth.
Once again: Cucks gonna cuck.
Dozens???
Three of my kids graduated from universities about the size of Notre Dame. There were so many people at every one of them that four or five dozen could get up and walk out, and no one would have noticed.
Their parents must be proud knowing they raised such spoiled children and are sending them into the world...or not, and they are still spoiled children.
3143 Graduated from ND. Looked it up. About 100 walked out.
3% of the class was malcontent losers and it is headline news.
Heaven help the firms that hire these clowns.
I think they should have to send for their diploma by mail - postage due.
They graduated, so withholding their diploma would be wrong. However, I would see no problem with their paying a modest penalty for having disrupted the ceremony.
There are plenty of idiots in our world.
