Why ‘Wonder Woman’ is less American than ever
New York Post ^ | June 1, 2017 | Maureen Callahan

The long-awaited “Wonder Woman” has generated more buzz than any movie this year, and rightly so. She’s the most beloved and iconic female superhero ever, yet it’s taken decades — the film’s been in development since 1996 — for a Wonder Woman movie. It’s the first to pair a female director with a big-budget, comic-book film meant to be a franchise. In Gal Gadot, it has a star who served in the Israeli army and brings authority to her fight scenes.

“She is the ultimate symbol of strength,” Gadot said in 2015. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d grow up to be in a movie playing someone who influenced as many women as she has.”

What’s curious about this version, coddled and crafted over decades, is the near-total absence of America. Wonder Woman was born during World War II, created by American psychologist William Moulton Marston, and her debut on the cover of DC’s Sensation Comics in 1942 depicted her in red, white and blue, storming into battle. She’d left her home, Paradise Island, to fight the Nazis in “America, the last citadel of democracy and of equal rights for women!”

Not a bad article. So, 70% of all box office revenue is now generated overseas. Wonder why that is? Perhaps if they wouldn't create movies that seem apologetic over America, and wouldn't "sanitize" them, more Americans would turn out and they would get a higher percentage of revenues from the US!

Anti-American hollyweird markets 70% overseas and we wonder why the world has a distorted image of America?

This has been going on for years. Remember the "Red Dawn" debacle? They literally destroyed the film's premise so as not to anger China.

The 69% of overseas revenues that mega-hit "Frozen" enjoyed will guarantee Disney won't make Elsa "gay" as the left is demanding. It would cripple their box office in places like Japan, where it earned a stunning $260 million alone.

I am no expert on super heroes, but I didn’t think WW was from the U.S. Isn’t she from her own island nation?

Could it be that overseas has more than 2-1/2 times the population of the US?

Her outfit used to look like it was tailored from an American flag, but perhaps no longer.

Movies based on video games, comic books, and Disneyland rides don’t do much for me - meaning I don’t pay to see them.

Because of all the people who live outside the US but also go to movies?

That said, the Wonder Woman stands to make (at least) a good $150-$200 million in the US just on box office receipts. It's not like people here will be avoiding it.

Are dollars earned in America somehow better than dollars earned overseas?

Gal gadot is a stone fox. I laughed when Julia “horseteeth” Roberts won sexiest woman alive. They must not have seen superman versus Batman.

Yes; originally called “Paradise Island”, but changed to “Themiscyra” in the comics. Diana is the “daughter” of Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons of Greek myth (fashioned as a clay baby and given life by the Greek mythical “gods” rather than being conceived the normal way), and as long as the Amazons stay on their island, they have immortality in the flesh, but when Steve Trevor, an ASUSA officer, crash-lands off the coast, Diana loses her immortality by falling in love with him and insists on going with him to the USA.

Probably the reason that most of the movies I’ve seen over the past few years, have been foreign films.

No doubt. There will be zero husbands & boyfriends complaining about being dragged to this movie.

Indeed. Taking jobs American superheroes could be doing.
