The next time your teenager whines that schoolwork is stressing him or her out, mention gaokao. Its a one-word explanation for why China is eating our school lunch.
Gaokao is the three-day period each year when high school seniors in China take exams to see if they will be admitted to university. Put simply, the rest of their lives will be determined by their results.
Students study for months to prepare for the exams, which are taking place this week across China. A poor score, for whatever reason, means the student will probably never be admitted to any of the 2,200 Chinese universities, where some 20 million students are enrolled.
The pressure generated by gaokao is enormous and the consequences are for a lifetime, says Bill Bennett, a former U.S. Secretary of Education who is now chairman of the group Conservative Leaders for Education. Could we learn something from China that might help improve our educational standards? Absolutely.
How big a deal is gaokao? Tens of thousands of neighbors gather around buses ferrying the departing students from their towns and villages to wish them well. To create better conditions for study, police enforce no honking traffic laws. Dancing in village squares, a popular activity in China, is suspended. And residents whose televisions are too loud get warning visits from the authorities.

I have a close friend who has worked in STEM education for years. He’s done a lot of research on systems of education in Asia, and he has a surprisingly dim view of the Japanese system in particular. From what I’m reading in this article, he’d probably hold the same dim view of the Chinese system.
Sounds like a lovely place — if we can’t move there, let’s make it like that right here...[/sarc]
Not sure if there has been changes but from what I understand Japanese students were so burnt out college was four years of partying.

It's the same in a large part of the world, by the way.
These systems just puke out programmed bots-—dependent on the system’s programming so they are ALWAYS incapable of independent creative thinking. (being human). they did not receive the tools to “think coherently” which only comes from Classical Christian curricula.
They will be controlled completely (after the Mind Control system of 12 years of indoctrination—conditioning emotions and tying them to irrational concepts) and if they test out to have embedded agency (or capable of independent thought for truth)—they will be banned, killed or jailed. Much like the scientists under Stalin’s constitution where truth was banned—only lies that fed the “correct” Narrative: God is Dead, Slavery is Freedom.
The Common Core “system” of mass indoctrination is Mind Control and implemented in all of Europe and Asia, etc. to create group-(non)-thinkers.
Christian worldview—that which created the idea of Individual Natural Rights only from God is being wiped out of young children. Agency and Virtue is being flipped to Slavery and Sodomy is “good” and “natural” and “Normal”. It is the way the Jesuits developed a system for the “elites” (Classical Christian curricula”) and then the “education” for the serf masses-—Programmed junk for useful idiots-—compartmentalized “thinking” so that they will be incapable of connecting the dot (incapable of understanding philosophy/abstract thinking about EVERYTHING) and be slaves for the State for life.
If you don’t pass the test - off to the salt mine.
This is true for Korea too.
It all descends from the system of Confucian exams tradionally used in China, Korea and other Confucian systems in ancient days. In order to have a place in the government or as a military officer, you had to pass the exams, and a lot of your young life (for those who could read and write, e.g., the aristocracy) was spent preparing for those exams.
I don’t understand why making our country more like China would be an improvement. Aside from the scenery, China is a pretty lousy place.
Military most likely.
They CHEAT like nobody’s business. The Chicom leaders only release the test scores from the well-educated kids in the elite provinces. They leave out the fact that ALMOST A BILLION F*&^ING RURAL FARMERS CAN’T READ!!! Oh yeah, those people. So whenever I hear about the high Chinese IQ, and their high test scores— yeah right. I trust communists
I 8understand the suicide rate among teens spikes after the tests...among those who don’t make the grade.
In the United States we adjust the academic requirements, SAT scores for example, based on the applicants race. It’s a higher bar for Asians at many universities, much lower for African applicants.
Can’t no longer be blamed on environmental factors as we’ve made doubly sure that what we used to call “minorities” get whatever it takes to level the playing field, so to speak.
Something else must be at play?
Because the teachers are unionized to the hilt and minorities are allowed to do what they please or will cry “racism”?
My first thought on reading the title is that at least someone is eating Michelle’s lunches.
I’m sure it didn’t take you long to figure out what the author meant.
Every time I hear someone mention how great the Chinese education is, I remind them they come over here and cheat their rear ends off in college. They cheat on tests, plagiarize dissertations, get others to do their work. They would rather take the chance of losing face by getting caught cheating than to lose face by receiving the low grades they deserve.
The amount of dollars their rich families bring to these colleges deter the schools from coming down as hard against the cheating as they should. But the Chinese don’t have a problem with cheating at all. It is the way of life for them.
Not talking about US Chinese, this is about native Chinese who come here from China for an education.
hahaha - that is what I thought too, man the hogs must be upset.
The Chinese aren’t majoring in “gender studies” and other such useless things.
Article is completely wrong; US student scores are lower than China ONLY because of demographic differences between US and China— if you compare apple to apple there is little difference.
2015 PISA SCORES
US AVG: 496 BUT
US Whites: 531
US Asians: 525
Mainland China AVG: 529
So US Asians and Chinese are pretty close, while US whites actually perform better than Chinese as a group.
