correct. About 7 people per 100,000 per year die because of the use of firearms in suicide. (This is about half of suicides.)
About 3 people per 100,000 per year die because of the use of firearms in homicide. (This is about 60 percent of homicides.)
As to how many of these homicides involving guns are justifiable homicides is another question. This is because the FBI statistics are based on reported crimes, and don’t reflect determinations that reported homicides are actually justifiable homicides. Furthermore, the FBI don’t even include most justifiable homicides. It seems fair to say that lives saved with the use of guns is at least half the number of lives taken with the use of firearms in homicides.
So, make that 1 or 2 lives lost per 100,000 per year due to homicides in which firearms were used, net of lives saved because of the use of homicides.
This simple analysis reveals that the predominant loss of life associated with the use of guns is suicides. And, removing guns will simply result in people killing themselves some other way. To paraphrase Archie Bunker, “Would rather they threw themselves out of windows?”
