Exxon Mobil signs on to Republican-led carbon tax proposal

WASHINGTON - Exxon Mobil Corp. and other large oil companies are backing a carbon tax proposal put forward earlier this year by a group of former Republican leaders including James A. Baker III, the former secretary of state and a Houston attorney.

The Climate Leadership Coalition, a group that includes Baker, former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, and former Secretary of State George Shultz, announced a list of "founding members" Tuesday that includes Exxon Mobil, BP, Shell, Total, General Motors and Johnson & Johnson.

"We support @TheCLCouncil as a founding member and are working to support its policy development process," Exxon Mobil tweeted Tuesday from its corporate account.

The coalition is urging President Donald Trump to adopt a tax on carbon emissions, revenue from which would be distributed among taxpayers to offset increases in energy prices.

Republican-led? Baker? Schulz? Paulson?

Led by Republicans who: (1) Never stood for election, and (2) Haven’t managed to worm their way into a meaningful appointment in about 3 decades time.

Increase in energy prices? Oil was $43 yesterday. Gas is fairly cheap. Coal is coming back. We’re exporting natural gas. What’s really going on?

Dude is 87 years old. I guess he's still working on his retirement fund. He's got to be worth a fortune already.

Giant corp’s eliminate smaller competitors with environmental and other regulations.

REMINDER: Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was Exxon CEO until a few months ago.

Carbon taxes hurt the little people because they are tacked onto utility bills while big business will get breaks.

As Nigel Farage has pointed out, the Corporatist conglomeration of big banks, big business and big government favor themselves over small business and the individual.

These buzzards are just trying to cash in.

They want to tax us to protect us from in increase of energy cost? No. they want to tax us to redistribute wealth. That is all this global warming and globalization is about. The rich will skim theirs and then the redistribute the rest.

Do the people proposing this carbon tax really think the rest of us are stupid enough to go along with this? What they seem to want to do is to tax someone/almost everyone & redistribute the money to offset taxes in other areas. Of course, some of that tax would have to be used to offset “operating expenses”. What could possibly go wrong?

Oil and gas industry RINO cronycrats sandbagging coal competition, coal has relatively higher carbon release per unit energy.
