According to Eberwein, a paltry 0.6 percent of donations granted by international donors to the Clinton Foundation with the express purpose of directly assisting Haitians actually ended up in the hands of Haitian organizations. A further 9.6 percent ended up with the Haitian government. The remaining 89.8 percent – or $5.4 billion – was funneled to non-Haitian organizations.

“The Clinton Foundation, they are criminals, they are thieves, they are liars, they are a disgrace,” Eberwein said at a protest outside the Clinton Foundation headquarters in Manhattan last year.

According to the Haiti Libre newspaper, Eberwein was said to be in “good spirits,” with plans for the future. His close friends and business partners are shocked by the idea he may have committed suicide.

“It’s really shocking,” said friend Gilbert Bailly. “We grew up together; he was like family.”

The Haitian government issued an official notice thanking Eberwein for his service and mourning his untimely death.

John Haley, 72, died December 2003 when the small plane he was piloting crashed while trying to land at an airport. Haley was once the personal lawyer of former Arkansas Gov. Jim Guy Tucker. Haley and Tucker were accused in 1995 of setting up a sham bankruptcy to hide profits from a business deal. Haley pleaded guilty and was fined and ordered to pay restitution. Tucker pleaded guilty in the case, and was also convicted in a separate trial on fraud charges involving James and Susan McDougal, the partners of President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Whitewater land deal. Also, Haley's ex-wife Maria Haley was a former aide to Clinton in Little Rock who became an Ex-Im [Export-Import] Bank board member during the Clinton years. Haley has ties to the crooked Riady family who operate the Lippo Group out of Jakarta, Indonesia. The Riadys ran afoul of federal bank regulators after they took control of the Worthen Bank in Little Rock in the 1980s. While at Ex-Im Bank, documents show Haley OK'd Enron-related federal loans for Indonesian projects worth more than $40 billion, including many involving Lippo and its subsidiaries.

Nachum was local to me and he offered me his professional services and gave me advice. I did not realize he was so sick. I am really sad for his loss right now. He was one of the good guys. I’ve been to his synagogue.

May his memory be for a blessing always.
