Here's what people turned in at N.J.'s biggest ever gun buyback(some pics)

There were nearly 5,000 weapons stacked high on rows of tables and jutting out of barrels inside the Newark Police Communication Center, where state and federal authorities announced the results of New Jersey’s largest gun buyback in state history.

The amnesty program held at churches in Newark, Trenton and Camden allowed residents to carry in firearms no-questions-asked.

Here’s what they brought.

“Assault weapons” is a loaded term, but authorities say the buybacks brought in 129 semi-automatic and automatic weapons, some of which were illegal in New Jersey.

“Many of those weapons are designed to pierce body armor, and getting just one of them off the street is a tremendous value,” state Attorney General Christopher Porrino said.

And herein lies the 'fidiocy' of these clowns: “Many of those weapons are designed to pierce body armor...." And in uninformed public won't even blink at that statement. Wonder if the goodfellas managed to dump some suspect weapons during the no questions asked turn in.

Good. The fewer guns in Marxist hands, the better.

All of the guns will be melted down this week. Porrino said because state officials offer amnesty to encourage people to turn in guns, they won't be tested at a ballistics lab the way most crime guns are examined.

1. What a shame that some antique and collectible firearms will be melted down.

2. Opportune time for someone with a gun that they KNOW would match an unsolved shooting through ballistics to destroy the evidence at the states expense and hand.

So the state can become an accomplice in covering up a murder...interesting unintended consequence. No need to throw the gun in the river - just hand it over to be melted.

I love this part: “All of the guns will be melted down this week. Porrino said because state officials offer amnesty to encourage people to turn in guns, they won’t be tested at a ballistics lab the way most crime guns are examined. “

If you had a murder weapon to get rid of, they’ll PAY you to do the job for you.

Hmmmm. Last gun show I looked for rifles that had labels on them stating the ‘wouldn’t’ shoot armor piercing bullets. No luck. ;-)

“Many of those weapons are designed to pierce body armor”

Ask him which ones were “designed” to pierce armor and i’ll bet he couldn’t name any. Just because they can penetrate armor doesnt mean they were made to.

In the early days of this insanity - cops were told they could NOT do background checks on the guns...

But still, lots of cops recognized the people bringing in the ‘guns for $50 rewards’ and they were the crooks who had robbed homes to secure the guns.

The crooks were keeping the stuff that was good and doing the buy backs from gullible stupid do-gooders. Using the money to buy better weapons... Anyone who believes this stuff works is a fool.

Looks like a fair number of those weapons were in scrap metal condition.

Looks like there were lots of nice pieces there including at least 2 vintage Remington nylon 66s. Even some bushmaster ARs. Sad to see quality arms destined for destruction.

Most are long guns. I do not believe it is illegal to possess a rifle, shotgun, etc. in NJ. You need a permit to BUY a gun and there are rules for transporting rifles and ammunition.

However, if your dad left it to you, etc. I don’t believe there is anything illegal about owning a rifle. Therefore, I call this “amnesty” almost total BS.

Many times folks get left a lot of rifles/ shotguns and they tell me after the fact that they just turned them all in at the police station. Happens because you have people that don’t know what to do with a gun.

Buybacks have become increasingly popular in recent years, though experts doubt their effectiveness at curbing gun violence. Researchers say they mostly draw "attic guns" — firearms turned in by people who simply had them stored in their homes and wanted to get rid of them.

Most of the guns are stolen propery that wasn't good enough for the crooks to use.

Add to that "safety for the crooks" to unload second class hot guns ... no 'pawn shop' records that could lead the police to them.... Nope, just cold hard cash from liberal fools. Enablers. Whatever we call the useful idiots you do more harm to the community than good...

So you can turn in your piece of junk and get a nice down payment for another new gun! Pretty good bargain. Thanks New Jersey!

Some of these suckers, more than likely, left lots of money on the table selling antique and valuable guns to the state at a major discount. But government always take advantage of suckers. Nothing new here.

BB guns are notorious for that.

In New Jersey a flintlock is an assault rifle.

“Many of those weapons are designed to pierce body armor....”

Since normally it’s the projectiles, not the firearms, that pierce bodies and body armor, the locals must be turning in spears and such.

Or maybe they tried sharpening the muzzles on their guns during the ammo shortage; and that’s why they are turning them in now.

“Many of those weapons are designed to pierce body armor, and getting just one of them off the street is a tremendous value,”

Apparently his main concern is law enforcement rather than the interests of the public in general.
