Surviving the North Korean Nuclear Threat
American Thinker.com ^ | August 13, 2017 | Ned Barnett and Dianne Bilderback

North Korea is really rattling its cage, threatening -- or perhaps promising -- to send atom bomb-tipped missiles toward the American territory of Guam. They are also making a follow-up threat of launching nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at the western United States -- including Hawaii and Alaska -- as well as states along the Pacific Coast -- Washington, Oregon, and California, along with Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho and perhaps even parts of Rocky Mountain states.

The “iffy” quality of these threats is based on the relatively poor performance during tests of Korean war rockets. For instance, North Korea -- when threatening Guam -- said they would send missiles to detonate within 17 miles of Guam, suggesting that their accuracy is, by U.S. and Russian standards, pathetic. The small nuclear bomb their Hwasong-12 rockets are able to carry, when detonating 17 miles from Guam, will cause relatively little damage to the island. However, if one of those missiles landed close to Anderson AFB, one of the other American bases on Guam or on the island’s capital city, Hagåtña -- known to Americans as Agana -- casualties would reach the tens of thousands.

However, if the North Koreans’ new ICBM -- the Taepodong-2, with a reported range of more than 6,000 miles, becomes war-capable -- and it has a way to go before that can be proven -- it might put cities as far east as Denver and Chicago at risk of a nuclear strike. The nuclear bomb it could carry would be small -- very likely smaller than the bomb which vaporized much of Hiroshima -- but even a small nuke would make the 9/11/2001 terror attack look like a walk in the park.

North Korea is not trying to hit Guam, they are just sending a "test" ICBM close to it. 17 miles is still outside of our territorial waters, so we can't claim they hit our territory.

Now, if they launch and the rocket lands 500 miles from Guam, then yes, it would be pathetic.

Unless Fat Boy is replaced with someone more sane, there will have to be a confrontation with NoKo sooner or later. Our only choice is the timing of the confrontation. It’s either NOW or LATER.

A friend used to have a little Davis Saturday night special in .380. It seemed to hit just about anywhere in a ten foot circle at 20 yards. Once in a great while, it hit what you aimed at. The Norks may have that kind of accuracy. LA might be a better target for them. And Guam? Why get wasted over tasking pot shots at Guam?

I keep thinking I should tell libs I know in Portland that some people think that, if we gotta get hit, Portland would be their first choice.

One of my friends was worried about losing his health care. Do the Norks have a comprehensive health care system? If so, what caliber?

“Why get wasted over tasking pot shots at Guam?”

They aren’t interested in Guam. This is nothing more than a simpleton trying to flip off a giant, in his mind. And he is so dull-witted he thinks it will have an effect. And the media is so dishonest they are using it as a slap at Trump. And the public is not calling them dishonest so the liars are getting away with it.

Let’s face it, if NK insinuated an attack on Hilary’s dog, the media would reference the ASPCA for a challenge back at them if it would make money and keep their readers happy. And NK doesn’t have an ICBM capable of reaching the coast of the US unless they sub launch. They have tested the Hwasong-14 twice and the tests indicate possibly reaching the left coast. But they haven’t indicated they can control it well enough to do so. And we know where their subs are at all times. Peek a boo.

If and when they have to go into NK to destroy/dismantle everything, they will find that Kim has no nukes and never did. It was all a ruse.

I”m assuming that their misled are GPS guided. Do the Chinese have GPS satellites seperate from ours? Can we scramble the guidance if they launch?

“Can we scramble the guidance if they launch?”

The US works with another thought process on nuclear attacks.

The first, a ground based defense system, or GMD, is designed to defend the United States against a “limited” nuclear attack. That means a strike with a handful of missiles, as opposed to a massive assault of the kind that Russia or China could launch. The United States relies on deterrence — the threat of overwhelming retaliation — to prevent Russia or China from ever unleashing missiles against us. In the case of North Korea or Iran, we would rely on GMD to knock a few incoming warheads out of the sky. This will be done prior to re-entry in space. That’s the approximate “midcourse” point in a warhead’s journey from launch pad to target. The Pentagon has spent more than $40 billion on the system already.

The GMD interceptors are 60-foot-tall, three-stage rockets. Each has a five-foot, 150-pound “kill vehicle” at its tip. In the event of an attack, interceptors would be launched from their underground silos. Once in space, the kill vehicles would separate from their boost rockets and fly independently toward their targets, at speeds up to 4 miles per second.

There are 37 operational interceptors — four at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County, Calif., and 33 at Ft. Greely, Alaska. So obviously these are placed to take out a small attack like Korea or Iran can produce, currently.

But to add insult to injury, Bill Clinton is responsible for the passing of the Missile Re-entry Vehicle program, MRV, to China, and they to North Korea. So their sighting capacity they currently use is a lot like our current system that has morphed from it from when it was passed to China by Loral and Hughes corporations approved by Clinton so they could sight their space shots in the late 90’s.

Tack that on to the computer systems Clinton sent to North Korea to be used for agricultural improvement, which they modified to enrich uranium, and the missiles they got from Russia, we have their current nuclear attack capacity. Thanks Bill.

Thank you. I’m sure Bill got us something good in exchange. Like a butt-ugly Presidential library.
