LOOK: Susan Sarandon joins more than 1,000 at Kaepernick rally at NFL offices

The fury surrounding the employment status of Colin Kaepernick has been taken to a new level, reaching full-blown froth on Wednesday night in the form of a rally at NFL headquarters attended by thousands to protest Kaepernick being unsigned by a team.

[Snip]

According to Tim Rohan of TheMMQB.com, the group of activists who organized the rally -- The People's Consortium for Human and Civil Rights, led by president Reverend Stephen Green -- had three demands of the NFL.

  1. That the NFL institute a policy to protect players' rights to have freedom of speech, so they can kneel, raise a fist or express opinions on social issues, if they wish.

  2. That the NFL establish a review board to, Green says, "examine issues of social injustice." As Tamika Mallory, a social activist and co-organizer of the 2017 Women's March, put it in her speech, "The NFL, just like the NYPD, cannot police itself. Any organization that is only being looked at from within is a failing organization. There must be a unit of people internally and externally that look at racial and cultural sensitivity issues within the NFL."

  3. And that the NFL develop some sort of program to "reinvest into the communities in which they serve, where there are high rates of unemployment, high rates of mass incarceration. To re-invest those funds into the community," Green says.

Typically speaking, the noise surrounding an issue like this dies out once the games start being played. But this is not a typical situation: Kap doesn't have a job, which means with each week that passes and each horrific quarterback performance that we watch unfold, the noise could get louder.

This is so simple.

Owners should say "When you're on the field on game day, you're on the clock. And when you're on the clock, you follow my rules. Protest on your own time, OFF the clock."

They do have a site, where you can send them some input about things. I think it would be great if a bunch of FReepers would share their sentiments on these issues.

Saw her recently in a biopic about Marilyn Monroe. She played Monroe’s mentally deranged mother. Was that even really acting?

The CFL season is half over. He was insulted at one offer he did get. That offer would be a kings ransom in the CFL. He won’t be playing up here. One has to humble oneself quite a bit to play in the CFL in comparison to the NFL.

If you look at the 2014 contract deal...it was built as a mega-contract...$126 million for seven years. However, it only reached that stage if he stayed on.

He had $12.3 million as a signing bonus...figure fifty percent of that went to IRS or the agent at the beginning of 2014. For 2014 season itself...he made roughly $650,000 for the season. The 2015 season ended up near the $10 million level (figure another fifty-percent for IRS and the agent). For the 2016 season, because of the wording in the contract (he had show all-star status to reach upper levels)...I don’t think he made more than $8 million for the whole season (figure half of that went to the agent and IRS).

In the end, you could be talking about a guy who made $16 million total. You can assume he bought a condo...a new car...splurged here and there. He might still have three million set into some long-term investment. If he lived in a frugal fashion...he could walk away and not worry.

The thing I see is that he had 2013 and 2014 as worthwhile seasons, and he appears to have lost his attitude in 2015. He has potential to catch on with a club who has a quarterback injury, and show some stuff worth keeping him around. But then you have to worry....will he do the ‘knee-trick’ again? You don’t need this kind of opera on the field.

I read last week that the driving force for his attitude is the girlfriend who has convinced him that he has calling for some social act. She’s some kind of radio personality.

He also told his agents not to accept any contract that puts him up as the back-up quarterback. I think he might still sign with someone around week eight of the season, for a lot less than he thinks....just to get facetime. If he doesn’t start this season at all? He’s finished.

If these liberals are so concerned about him having a roster spot, why don't they buy a team and sign him?

Because unless they are a team owner, personnel decisions are none of their business.

If the NFL had just fined and suspended Kaepernik for a few games, this never would've gotten out of hand. Part of his JOB is to show respect for the flag and national anthem during opening ceremonies. I could see allowing players to stay in the locker room as an option. If they were sincere and weren't in it to make spectacles of themselves, that would've satisfied them. Goodell has made such a mess of things at the very time the NFL should've been totally focused on minimizing concussions that it might be beyond saving. Can ANYONE use their job to promote a political agenda without getting fired?

I wonder what would happen if a player refused to wear a silly pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness.....another endeavor that takes time and focus away from what should be the core issue.

What is wrong with Caucasian guys, except for President Trump and just a handful of others? They're handing this nation to people who will turn us to the same fate as that of other nations which have turned away from their origins.

I saw a brief clip of Ray Lewis on ESPN last week when the Baltimore Ravens were apparently giving serious consideration to signing Kaepernick if their starting QB (Flacco) is out for an extended time with a recent injury.

Lewis didn't come right out and say it, but he gave some strong indications that Kaepernick hasn't been signed because every NFL coach or GM who has spoken with him in recent months is certain that he doesn't even consider pro football a major priority in his life anymore.

P.S. -- We've seen all of this stupidity from brainless media hacks and these demonstrators at the NFL's offices, but has anyone seen a video clip or a verified statement of any kind from Colin Kaepernick indicating that he even wants to play in the NFL? You'd think maybe he would have shown up at the NYC demonstration yesterday if he did.

Goodell should force the Cleveland Browns to hire Kaeperdick immediately and make him their starting QB all season long.

sure, last night it was approximate 1K and that is NYC midday. Most people were probably just standing around watching wtf was going on, but the left always inflates numbers. Sort of like that MASSIVE anti Trump protest in Arizona.

“According to Tim Rohan of TheMMQB.com, the group of activists who organized the rally — The People’s Consortium for Human and Civil Rights, led by president Reverend Stephen Green.”

For the first time, they have taken their “cause” off the field and put it into the system. Unfortunately they have taken it to the wrong people again. The NFL cannot do anything in the US that will make any difference. Take it to the politicians and embarrass some of them publically. They might as well have met at the Kodak Camera Company.

But let’s get to their “demands, they had three demands of the NFL.
1. That the NFL institute a policy to protect players’ rights to have freedom of speech, so they can kneel, raise a fist or express opinions on social issues, if they wish.”

Seen anyone stop them? Seen anyone get fined or suspended. The only one that probably put his foot in his mouth was Kaepernick. A failing employee of a failing company and they want to improve. He’s gone. And any business can determine the employability of a person if their attitude is not consistent with the business or creates bad PR through actions taken inconsistent with the owners and cost them money. So no one hired him as he continued his actions. Their battle is with the public, not the league.

2. That the NFL establish a review board to, Green says, “examine issues of social injustice.” As Tamika Mallory, a social activist and co-organizer of the 2017 Women’s March, put it in her speech, “The NFL, just like the NYPD, cannot police itself. Any organization that is only being looked at from within is a failing organization. There must be a unit of people internally and externally that look at racial and cultural sensitivity issues within the NFL.”

Heard of any? And Tamika Mallory is the daughter of parents who were founding members of Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, her formative years were spent attending protests and rallies. At just 15-years-old, she had become a staff member for the National Action Network. Mallory has since been a prominent civil rights activist and has worked closely with the Obama Administration on gun control legislation. In other words, another problem child that has never done anything productive in the world she is trying to “save” in her life.

3. And that the NFL develop some sort of program to “reinvest into the communities in which they serve, where there are high rates of unemployment, high rates of mass incarceration. To re-invest those funds into the community,” Green says.

The NFL is a business, not a philanthropy group. They are run just like any other business that handles a service to the public. Don’t try to force them to handle their financial part of the business. Additionally. The NFL foundation supports many charitable initiatives to further help the community to the tune of over $10 million a year. And the rest of their funds movement is way too large to point out like food banks, senior citizen donations,
This is getting long. And I don’t want it to. This rally was nothing m,ore than a publicity stunt to try to pressure the league, with stupid “demands,” to fold up to an outside source of activists, nothing more. The activists took it to the wrong place, talked to the wrong people, and had no rights to battle with, just PR thrashing You want to come up with something? I’ll back you. You want to throw mud at a business that donates millions of dollars to cities across the US every year, with nothing other than a disgruntled employee not being re-contracted due toi huis attitude and lack of support for the team, that made more money than most people will make in a life time in one year, You don’t get my support. You get my disgust.

As much as I love some movies 17 times would be a bit much for me.

You probably have much of the dialog memorized—and the songs,of course.
