Help! Can anyone tell me what this typically means for Austin?

You'll get wet. But if this thing does as it is expected, it's going to sit over the coastal areas and dump ungodly amounts of rain on them. Heaviest stuff will be in the southeast.

Texas seems to give plenty of warning to not try.

You are going to get wet. Heavy rainfall. High winds. But not the beating the more coastal cities will take. I'll predict a swing eastward at landfall that will pound Houston and put New Orleans under water again.

“not implemented mandatory evacuations, but Mayor Joe McComb called for people to leave in the “strongest possible terms”

Strange. I would’a called “mandatory” the “strongest possible...

EXACTLY the same place! Shoal Creek saloon has closed a dozen times or more over the years due to the flooding that affects that part of town. That is across Lamar from where that WF was originally.

Were you here in '91? Those were some hellacious floods we had from Dec. through Jan '92.

I’m familiar with the area and have lived in SW La. & SE Tx for most of my life. I’ve been
thru a few ‘canes and have had one home unlivable for some months while dealing with
insurance companies and contractors. And have been in traffic congestion headed north
evacuating the area as you described. We went north towards DFW.

The restaurant at the Lynchburg Ferry Landing is still there. Somehow.

I grew up in Pasadena/Deer Park, and have lived back there for the past year-ish.

"The Weather Service correctly predicted Katrina five days before and the morons did not leave. I think it was Bush’s fault and he hated black people or something."

Yeah, that was part of meme from some liberal racist MSM talking heads. I remember all the whining and crying by Jeraldo and Sheppie Smith wondering where was the Fedgov? "Why are these babies not having drinking water?" Then the big lie about the Superdome rapes and deaths.

Fact is: Bush had already ordered FEMA resources into staging areas and alerted the National Guard to be on call. The Governor Blanco at the time failed to officially ask for Fedgov assistance until 2-3? days later after the devastation. It's law that a Governor has to request Fedgov help. It's there to protect States' Rights against over-rule of the Fedgov.

Then there's the cowardly Mayor Nagin who bailed out before Katrina hit NOLA and leaving hundreds of school buses and many municipal buses sitting that could have evacuated hundreds if not some thousands of the morons who wouldn't leave. His only credit was that he ordered an evacuation and then skipped town.

Like everyone I watched this disaster happen real time. Once the first responders (mostly Coast Guard) were activated, the rescue efforts were amazing. But no, transport those idiots on their roofs over to Texas and they start to rob and loot. Where were the NOLA police? Oh right, they were confiscating guns, looting stores, and just going home. That has been proven fact with even some photos of the police looting.

I live in Lockhart (30 miles SE of Austin) and am a lifelong Central Texan so.........
It means lots and lots of rain since the storm is predicted to be move slow - now Austin, like much of Central TX has lots of rivers, streams, and dams. Heavy rain will fill the agricultural fields and the runoff will go into the streams and rivers which will eventually reach the dams. Enough runoff reaching the dams means they have to open them and that creates most of the really catastrophic flooding. A couple years ago heavy rains literally washed away large parts of the village of Wimberley which is about 35 miles SW of Austin. In Austin itself, the low lying areas will probably flood. I would make arrangements to park my vehicle in a multistory or elevated garage of possible to avoid flood damage if I lived in a low lying area or within 2 miles of a river or stream.

The impacted area has some enormous cattle ranches. I hope they can get those doggies to high ground.
