That was a 2 hour event. People showed up and left.

Was there contraflow?

Were there police escorts?

Was there planning 4-5 days in advance on getting out those in hospitals, nursing homes, and the elderly in buses? Were certain lanes reserved for those vehicles?

EVERY major city has evacuation plans for the most vulnerable.

MSM is giving the Democrat mayor a pass but will blame Trump for the death toll.

Basically, this will be Katrina Part 2. Blame Bush is now Blame Trump.

Half the city of Houston ‘evacs’ itself and back everyday communting to/from work/school/airports. Grew up there.

No doubt Trump will be blamed. It’s all about propaganda now, and no good calamity can be passed over to push the idea Trump is a racist reckless man who cares for nobody but himself, and his followers all agree with that type of mindset.

Never mind none of it is true.

I lived there for fifty years, beginning with Hurricane Carla.

I’m telling you that evacuating the most flood-prone areas is the way to save lives.

There would be no need to evacuate the entire city (that would be a nightmare) and rescue efforts would not be stretched so thin as they are now.

I know the area and never had a home that flooded because there are some areas that are more flood-prone than others.

Gov. Abbot (Republican) will also be blamed.

I think he did the right thing

So do I. Katrina was as horrific as it was because the levees failed and because it was idiotic to put people in that arena. There's just no good way to evacuate millions of people; best to concentrate on those with medical issues who wouldn't survive shortages and outages.

Some stories popping up on the topic:

http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/27/us/houston-evacuation-hurricane-harvey/index.html

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2017/08/27/harvey-is-causing-epic-catastrophic-flooding-in-houston-why-wasnt-the-city-evacuated/

At a Friday news conference, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) encouraged residents in low-lying and coastal areas of the state to evacuate, even if a mandatory evacuation order had not been issued.

“Even if an evacuation order hasn’t been issued by your local official, if you’re in an area between Corpus Christi and Houston, you need to strongly consider evacuating,” Abbott said. “What you don’t know, and what nobody else knows right now, is the magnitude of flooding that will be coming.

“You don’t want to put yourself in a situation where you could be subject to a search and rescue.”

The governor’s warning was in sharp contrast to the advice local and county officials had been dispensing for days: to shelter and stay in place. And it set off a scramble by local officials on social media to tell their residents otherwise.

Not mentioned often but Katrina also had a high loss of life because people stayed with their pets. Shelters didn’t take animals and people didn’t want to leave their dogs or cats alone. Hundreds of people died because of that and they’ve since addressed it for future disasters.

There were pictures in the aftermath of Katrina of people who walked north. It was the most efficient way to get away from the devestation.

It doesn't seem like this is an option for this storm, with all the rain and flooding.

Maybe the Mayor will be correct. Time will tell. Contrarily,to not learn the lessons of Katrina and other Hurricanes,I feel no pity. From this point on, everything will be blamed on the President. It’s the same set up as Katrina. The left has politically weaponized Natural Disasters. Even Sandy was deflected off of Obama and stuck to Gov. Christie and may have gotten Obama re-elected.

As the death toll rises, we’ll check back on this sage advice.

What this tells me more than anything, is that there is no emergency preparedness planning. NONE! Hey, it’s just something we can’t do anything about. Let’em die.

There should be a plan in place to shut down all in-bound traffic, and move as many people out of the area as possible.

Routes should be set up based on the area of the city you live in.

Some people go straight North. Some folks go East or West then North, or simply farther East or West.

All city metro buses, school buses, and any other large capacity vehicles should be utilized to cut down on private vehicles.

Areas should be designated for some sort of rest stops, food stations and tents or other accommodations.

I’m not buying the idea a massive number of people couldn’t be moved in an orderly manner, if detailed planning were done in advance.

W. has been in Crawford. G.H.W. has a place in Houston last I heard.

Gov. Abbot told people to evacuate two days ago, but was contradicted by the Mayor:

http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/texas/article/Abbott-advises-Houstonians-to-evacuate-local-11959607.php

I’m sure we’ll be seeing air footage of dozens and dozens of buses underwater as we did in Katrina.

Again, it’ll be Trump’s fault.

Houston metro may be 10x the size of New Orleans. And then, “dry” might be 100+ miles away. Exactly where would they go, be housed, be fed, or even go to the bathroom?

There sure are a lot of armchair quarterbacks on things like this...the people working with or for him are logistics experts. That’s what they do for a living, and they’ve probably been doing it for decades.

I guarantee an evacuation of several million people would have caused hundreds of causalities _in and of itself_, even with several days warning and dry weather.

You don’t have to evacuate millions. But the more you can get, folks in high risk areas, folks who can’t care for themselves, folks who are just plain happy to bug, are fewer people you have to provide for. I’m seeing lots of pictures of stranded vehicles that, if not a problem now, soon will be. Folks who leave take vehicles with them, vehicles which won’t pose a problem later. Every warm body that bugs is a help. Local officials down there who encouraged people to stay made a horrific situation worse.

Contraflow. Allow traffic out only on ALL lanes.

Buses - city and school buses.

Evacuate the most vulnerable with police escorts (elderly, medical patients, nursing home residents, newborns, and those in flash flood areas).

Agree. There’s NO HELP when you need it most.

Instead, there’s political spin and disinformation.
