No joke. Anymore, you send your young people to college and all you’re doing is sending them into a shark-tank for shake-down rackets. College towns are just bent on wrenching every nickel from them possible. From the parking tickets handed out on streets that are completely unmarked (you’re responsible for knowing every line of the city code and all ordinances, ignorance of them is no excuse!) to the cops that hand out bogus tickets to anybody with an out-of-state plate, sticker, or any other marker depicting that the person isn’t from around there to the shysters getting everybody and anybody to sign up for credit cards. For what you see out on the town, it’s redoubled on-campus. It’s like Vegas, it’s all gamed to separate the student from their money. I know, I lived it for 5 years getting my undergrad degree and it made me a lot more careful of where I got my master’s.

Thanks for the mention.

I wasn’t aware the local community was geared to sapping kids dry too.

I’m glad you made it through.

It’s a mess and it seems to be sliding downhill fast from here.

You wind up wondering how much worse it could get.

There is no upside whatever to starving legitimate research programs.

Please. These Universities have huge endowments the size of some state's budgets. Also alumni who are millionaires.

Get the Feds out of education, and they will find the money themselves instead of pissing it away on transgender research studies.

Too much CAGW research and way too much research into 57 gender studies.

Our universities have been pulling an NFL for decades.

Folks are tired of it.

Yep.

We need to cut the welfare off to these universities that hate half our citizens.

I agree.

Get your staff near political parity and knock off this anti-American carp, or close up shop.

The taxpayers’ money comes from other investment opportunities. Opportunities that would have returned ‘dividends’ to all.
An article that pretends otherwise is a lie.

That’s the lie here: that there is no economic cost for this money- it’s ‘free money’.

Their standard defense is always, "Those programs make money!!" Those programs make plenty of money--for ESPN and the other networks that show them play.

The other dirty little secret is how much state and fed money goes to fund the faculty cocktail and fufu buffet socials, cell phones, laptop computers, and other electronic goodies for faculty, and the U president and senior staff's trips to France, Switzerland, and Germany for "business". Somebody needs to be auditing that crap.

There’s a lot of junk research that can be cut.

You should read the comment section at the source link. You have to look for the black ‘Comments’ bar at the bottom of the article next to the Twitter and Facebook links. It’s priceless. Trump is dumbing down the world, that’s his purpose, he’s creating a new idiocracy, blah blah blah. Considering what these Obama-voters have done to the military for the last 8 years, don’t expect me the cry a frickin’ river because they U crowd’s sacred cow programs are falling on hard times. They don’t know what it’s like to be in the military and have to go buy your own supplies out of savings because the military is under sequestration and can’t even make payroll for its people much less afford the proper tools and bench-stock.

Yeah, article drones on and on about research, but the reason college towns are boom towns is because of the sheer number of upper middle class employees, whose lifestyle has been subsidized by the college credit bubble and the resulting skyrocketing tuitions.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I did go over and look, but quite a bit of it seemed to address private vs public funded research.

Of course the private funded research had to be evil, and the public funded research was thought of highly. One wonders what ideologies at work here. /s

Universities perform more than half of all basic research in America, and public research universities in particular account for two-thirds of the $63.7 billion allocated annually by the federal government for research. That spending, in turn, produces more than 2,600 patents and 400 companies a year, according to the Association of University Technology Managers.

...

Shouldn’t they be making money from those patents and companies allowing them to fund their own research?

They do. I know the University of Wisconsin, Madison makes money from its patents.

Let me ask u this, if u want to fund science, would u fund someone who has been doing it for a life time at a national lab, or some kid who just got out of high school?

That's more true than people think. I can't tell you how many times as a college student that I've seen a prof assign his research work to the students as homework or a project, then take the best solution and have his grad students write it up and incorporate it into his ongoing research paper for future publishing. I saw this happen as a sophomore in the engineering program.

The fact is, most university Ph.Ds. are idiots. They teach a couple of classes during the day, that's all they do. They have an army of grad and undergrad students do their research for them, grade their homework, projects, and tests, teach their classes on Friday when they want to get a jump on the weekend, and teach their night lab sections. Most of them are grammatical idiots, so they don't even write up "their" work, the grad students do that. Then it publishes and the U prof gets an award for having done absolutely nothing except maybe walk around the guys doing the work, critiquing on the fly, and giving stupid suggestions that would crash the project if implemented. Oh, and they earn a six-figure salary for doing this. No wonder these guys stay at the university until they're so old they're petrified. They'll never get to go to the socials, get free travel, get all the free goodies, and make nearly as much money in retirement.

Contrast this with the real brains that work at the national labs. They don't get hired right out of school. They have to show that they have actual smarts and can actually PRODUCE something useful out in industry. The national labs are very selective because granting somebody a super-duper top secret security clearance is very time-consuming and expensive. They're not going to just give that to some warm body that they hope is going to work out.

Universities are a waste of money and a huge source of Satanic thinking.

The government should not be funding education of any kind, at any level. So, we ought to be selling off the state colleges and universities to private, for-profit sector where that is possible, and sell off the property of those we can’t sell as going concerns. Same thing for K-12 schools. PARENTS are responsible for deciding whether, how much and by who their children should be educated. We need to free them up to make choices that are best for their families.

What would happen once government schools went away? The marketplace would reward trade and technical schools and punish those that teach useless liberals arts and humanities. The only “soft” areas of study would exist at religious colleges and aimed at raising up champions for God in the ministry.

The study of literature, music, philosophy, women’s studies, black studies, etc. would fade away for lack of subsidies. Research would go back into the hands of corporations and would focus on useful, economy-growing project. Programs granting “science” degrees in crap like “climate science,” “social sciences,” astronomy, archeology, psychology, etc., would become rare.

” -——lack the wealthy private institutions that fuel the knowledge industries found in Silicon Valley or along Boston’s 128/I-95 corridor.

That “corridor “ isn’t in Boston, but it IS in Massachusetts.
