Amazon receives 238 proposals for its second headquarters

ct 23 (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc has received 238 proposals from cities and regions across North America for where it should open its second headquarters, it said on Monday.
The number of applicants underscores the wide interest in the contest, which Seattle-based Amazon announced last month. The world’s largest online retailer said it would invest more than $5 billion and create up to 50,000 jobs for “Amazon HQ2”.

A “tax free” state? No such animal.
Income tax or real estate tax (or BOTH). All states have ‘em.
Cities had to send in a proposal. Not all cities want that disruption and grief.

Sadly I can see Baltimore having a shot. Under Armour is just starting a massive project to build a huge corporate campus. Adding amazon the the mix would be easy and much of the preliminary work is already done. Most of the land is acquired.
Boston is trying to get this one...and they're using "we have brainy people here" (not an *exact* quote) as the argument.
It ain’t just tax breaks.
Amazon - a publicly traded company subject to SEC and other regulations - is demanding and receiving absolute secrecy from local and state governments who are subject to FOIA disclosures.
Vain local politicians love being part of the inner circle but nevertheless give frequent media interviews. In scenes worthy of a Mark Twain novel they constantly mutter that ‘they can’t say too much’ and ‘without going into detail’ - which obviously renders the interviews pointless.
What they will never say is that they are picking winners and losers at Amazon’s behest, despite Amazon having more cash on hand than any existing local business. The existing businesses get to pay Amazon’s considerable share of taxes for 7-10 years (likely) AND they get to fund all manner of ‘civic improvement’ to comply with Amazon’s bizarre and extensive list of demands.
And what are those demands? Well, Amazon is most definitely a political animal given the political mania of Jeff Bezos. Amazon/Bezos demand that Logan’s Run-style downtown areas are established where the peasants must work and play and all needs and wants are provided. Amazon doesn’t want to be in a suburban office park despite a suburban office park making the most sense for their plans. No, they want to be downtown. For most cities this means razing large swathes of buildings or reclaiming brownfields. Both of these require large expenditures. Amazon wants pedestrianized streets, the usual money-pit of public transport, parks, trails, etc. etc. Again, a suburban setting would offer all of these but Amazon wants to beat the Republican-leaning voters over the head with their expensive, artificial brand of urban renewal.
In sum, Amazon is advocating a bifurcated society (again) where the proles live in rabbit warrens and the elites live in greenbelts.
Considering what a mess Upstate is, Cuomo couldn’t beg, borrow, and/or steal enough money to bribe Amazon to move here. Heck, we’re gonna lose at least 1 House seat after the next census. Lost 2 after the last one. Amazon would be nuts to site in a state losing House seats.

Yes. Much more traffic near the stadiums that are home to the two feckless Baltimore pro teams. And the new Horse Shoe Casino. It would be interesting though to track to graft payments to City officials in the event Bloodymore gets the deal.
