I think it was shown that the rough ride did not happen. What is speculated to have happened is the perp repeatedly banged his own head in the van, perhaps hoping for an injury to put him in the hospital rather than jail. He wasn’t bright enough to realize that he could REALLY hurt himself doing this, which he did.

I recall reading that Freddy Gray had previously attempted to harm himself in police custody, figuring that if he showed up bloody in court he could skate on charges.

Worked, he was never charged.
